Frat Pack Tribute in Cool Tricks and Trinkets Newsletter
From the June
22 issue: "Fans of movies such as "Dodgeball", "Old
School", and "Anchorman" will love this site. It is an online
tribute to the "frat pack" (a reference to the brat pack of the
80's and Sinatra's rat pack of old), a group of hilarious actors including
Ben Stiller, Luke and Owen Wilson, Will Ferrel, and Steve Carell that often
share the screen together as co-stars and friends.
Get the scoop on the latest film projects starring the members of the frat pack, read interviews with the cast of this comic cadre, and check out a host of other fun features. Don't forget to watch the hilarious trailer for the upcoming movie "Talladega Nights", starring the always hysterical Will Ferrel."
Frat Pack Tribute is Yahoo! Pick of the Week!
We just learned that we are the pick of the week for June 18.
The Frat Pack Tribute
In the '50s, the rat pack ruled. In the '80s, the brat pack took over. Now,
the frat runs things. The Frat Pack is a group of comedic actors that includes
Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, and Ben Stiller (and others). The
actors have a tendency to show up in each other's movies, often in cameos
(think Ferrell's appearance at the end of "Wedding Crashers"). Today's
Pick celebrates the Frat Pack's meaty, cheesy dominance over Hollywood. The
site, obviously run by big fans of the group's work, maintains a movie scorecard
and brief biographies of all key members. It also explains the name's origin,
and even features its own podcast. Now that's dedication.

Congrats to New Dad Jack Black
Jack Black and his wife, Tanya Haden, are parents of a baby boy,
the actor said. "I'm going to be the best daddy on the planet and I'm
going to enter the best daddy competition. And I'm going to win it,"
Black
said in a story
posted on the Web site of the magazine Us Weekly. The couple's first child
was born on Saturday, Black told "Access Hollywood" Monday evening
at the Mann Grauman's Chinese Theatre premiere for his new movie, "Nacho
Libre." "I've got the babe back at home safe and sound and I'm actually
very anxious to get back" to them, Black, 36, told the program.
Neither Us Weekly nor "Access Hollywood" reported the baby's name. Black has starred in films including "The School of Rock" and "King Kong," and has a band called Tenacious D. Haden, 35, is a cellist and the daughter of jazz great Charlie Haden.
Fandango Presents: Frat Pack Summer - Ten Years of Tomfoolery with
Comedy’s New ‘Magnificent Seven’
There's a great
Frat Pack article from movie ticket company Fandango.
In 1996, two groups of class clowns in L.A. and Texas made a small dent at the box office with two underdog comedies. Ever since, the guys behind Swingers and Bottle Rocket and a few of their assorted friends have been causing a seismic shift in pop culture.
A label coined by USA Today’s Susan Wloszczyna, “The Frat Pack” comprises seven talents: Swingers’ Vince Vaughn, Bottle Rocket’s Owen and Luke Wilson, and pals/frequent co-stars Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell and Steve Carell. Since 2003's Old School, they've been comedy’s surest thing at the spring and summer box office.
Summer 2006 is gearing up to be another barrel (a few bottles and a couple kegs) full of laughs, featuring six out of the seven Frat Packers in new projects. The following is our scorecard of their upcoming projects, their memorable moments so far, and a few extra bits about these amiable pranksters.
Vince Vaughn - The Frat King
Jack Black - Party Chair
Will Ferrell - Mr. Obnoxious
Owen Wilson - The Sunshine Kid
Ben Stiller - Mr. Do It All
Luke Wilson - The Regular Guy
Steve Carell - The New GuyThe article refers to related actors as "stepbrothers."
The Break-Up Number Two with $20 million
According to Box
Office Guru "Following its surprise top spot debut last weekend,
the Vince Vaughn-Jennifer Aniston comedy The Break-Up dropped a sizable 48%
in its sophomore frame and placed second with $20.3M. With an impressive $73.9M
in only ten days, the Universal release looks to reach the neighborhood of
$120M by the end of its domestic run. It was produced for $52M. Overseas,
The Break-Up opened in Australia and New Zealand with a combined $2.2M from
230 locations, helped by local appearances by the film's stars."

The Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston film stunned industry observers
by taking the top spot at the North American box office with ticket sales
of about $38.1 million during its first three days, according to studio estimates
issued on Sunday. The Universal Pictures release, which was savaged by critics,
had been expected to open in the $20 million range.

The Break-Up Scores Big at the Box Office!
From Box
Office Guru:
"Moviegoers were lured in to see Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston duke it outon Friday as their not-so-romantic comedy The Break-Up captured the number one spot with an estimated $15.8M in its first day of release. Debuting stronger than expected, the Universal release beat out the $10.8M opening day of Vaughn's Wedding Crashers from last summer as well as the $9.7M first day of Aniston's hit Along Came Polly. With such a solid start, The Break-Up could collect $42-46M over the entire weekend session swiping the box office crown from the mutant collective."

Is Stiller/Carrey Flick Used Guys in Trouble?
We received this report from an anonymous tipster:
A "Hollywood source" I've got is saying Used Guys fell apart and people are leaving the project. I haven't heard much besides that it didn't look like it would be happening.
Now, as I looked around for any clues, I go to the IMDb boards and find a thread saying "Fox pulled the plug."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478313/board/thread/43370428
"Fox pulled the plug by - Paul-Hunton 5 hours ago (Mon May 15 2006 07:10:58)
For the last 4 weeks I've been working on this movie as a PA and this weekend we found out FOX has pulled out. It may get picked up in the next couple of days but probably unlikely...."So I guess if someone on IMDB is reporting it, confirming what my source is saying, this sounds true.
Update: Fox has confirmed that the production has been halted due to "scheduling issues."

Will Ferrell Rocks Talladega
Will Ferrell appeared this weekend at the NASCAR
race in Talladega, Ala. to promote his summer comedy Talladega Nights:
The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. He was the Grand Marshall for the Aaron's
499 race, held Monday after a one day rain delay. Ferrell
signed autographs and met the fans during Sunday's rain delay, then got
the race started with the traditional "Gentlemen start your engines"
on Monday.

Will Ferrell Press Conference - April 30, 2006
From: Q&A:
Will Ferrell Regarding 'Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
ON SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS HERE TODAY:
"I am actually combining the two, I am signing a lot "Will Bobby,"
which is very confusing to people."
ON WATCHING MOVIES TO PREPARE FOR THIS ROLE:
"Oddly enough, we looked at Kramer vs. Kramer, which we heard had some
great driving footage, but it's not a racecar movie which I thought it was.
I thought it was about two drivers named Kramer. So wasted a lot of valuable
research time doing that. We did watch 'Six Pack' with Kenny Rogers. But we
watched Days of Thunder, actually. We just basically wanted to see how they
shot things and just out of curiosity and the fact that John C.Reilly makes
his comeback in this movie."
ON WHETHER THERE IS AN ACTUAL 'BALLAD' OF RICKY BOBBY:
"You know what, there isn't. There is actually a song that we filmed
that Ricky and Cal sing, but it is not in the film, it will be on the DVD.
I guess that is the closest thing to a ballad."

Director Confirms Cameos by Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd in Ben Stiller's
Night at the Museum
They've appeared in more than a half-dozen movies together, and now old friends
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have reunited for "Night
at the Museum," the currently filming comedy about the adventures of
a clueless security team dealing with cursed displays that come to life. "I'm
just gonna go for the shock and awe of all the famous names that I could throw
at you," laughed director Shawn Levy recently. "We've got Ben Stiller,
Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Ricky Gervais, Paul
Rudd, Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson." Stiller added that his
"Starsky & Hutch" co-star will be playing one of the tiny displays.
"Owen Wilson is gonna be portraying a little 3-inch cowboy," Stiller
said. (MTV

Will Ferrell Voted Most Fun Celebrity on a Friday Night
This clearly isn't the most prestigious award, but Will had a tough March
so nice to see some positive news.
When asked, "Who'd be the most fun on a Friday night?" in a personality quiz poll, 31.26% of voters chose funny-man Will Ferrell as the celebrity that they would party with. The former SNL comedian may have earned this vote of confidence from the party characters that he's portrayed. Frank "The Tank" Ricard in Old School, the savoir bachelor Ron Burgundy in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and the ultimate wedding crasher, Chazz Reinhold, in Wedding Crashers have helped to create Ferrell's Friday night-fiend persona. It was just enough to give the USC grad two more votes than Tragic Kingdom diva, Gwen Stefani. (PR Web)

Jack Black Wows, Slimes at Kids' Choice Awards
Jack Black wowed them at Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards yesterday. He opened
the show singing a version of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright
for Fighting" with updated lyrics ("Saturday Night's Alright for
Sliming"). He wore a jumpsuit remenescent of Evel Knievel.
The hosting gig was otherwise uneventful, until the conclusion of the show where the "super secret" celebrity was slimed. This year it was Robin Williams. Jack slimed him with a hose, then Williams turned the tables by spraying Black. There were no other Frat Pack stars or friends in attendance.

Is Will Ferrell Dead? Is Jack Black Married?
Hard
to tell what the big news item of the day is.
We received reports via a false and badly written press-release (since removed) indicating that Will Ferrell had died in a paragliding accident. This harkens to Will's character from Wedding Crashers who crashes a funeral of hang-glider ("What an idiot! Hey, I'm hang-gliding! Aaaahhh! Take a picture, honey, I'm dead!").
Turns out it's just a cruel hoax. Meanwhile, we're pleased to hear that Will Ferrell Is Unimpressed with Oscar Mistake. Along with his Razzie "win" Will is having a hell of a month!

more maybe-it's-true-maybe-it-isn't news, it appears that Jack Black has eloped
with girlfriend Tanya Haden! He's off the market ladies!
Black, 36, and Haden, 34, first met while attending Crossroads High School in Santa Monica, a school heavy on the perfroming arts, though they were never romantically involved. It was only last spring that they reconnected, shortly after Black's split from his longtime girlfriend, comedian Laura Kightlinger, and began dating. (Yahoo! News)

Frat Pack Oscar Report: Will Ferrell Snubbed!
The Frat Pack made a big impact at the Oscars, but once again were snubbed.
Ben Stiller got the ball rolling by presenting Best Visual Effects. To illustrate, he donned a green suit to "demonstrate" the effects. Needless to say, Stiller's ability to commit worked. He was hilarious!

Next up were Owen and Luke Wilson to present Live Action Short Film. Rather than go for laughs, the brothers recounted their tale of turning their first film project, Bottle Rocket, from a 14 minute film to a $5 million feature -- that grossed $1 million.

Next, Will Ferrell and Steve Carell presented the award for Best Make-Up. But not after the Academy threw one last snub to group that produced critically acclaimed movies yet no nominations. Thanks to Defamer, we see that Will's name was mispelled! Will and Steve showed the chemistry that they've shared in many recent movies. Also shown: Will Ferrell with Will Smith, promoting their new movie "Where there's a Will, there's a way."

Jennifer Aniston presented the award for Best Costume Design but sadly went to the event alone. Contrary to some reports, Jenn was not sporting a ring on her ring finger (it was on the middle finger of her left hand).
Congrats to Along Came Polly star Philip Seymour Hoffman for winning Best Actor.
Super Big thanks to Kamia for the videos:
Look for more commentary and exclusive red carpet coverage over the next few days.

Wendell Baker Story Preview and Carell/Virgin Commentary
We recieved this thoughtful note:
You may discuss on the Frat Pack ForumMy name is Mario, I'm from Sweden, I'm a fan and a writer, and I'm currently covering the Frat Pack for a Swedish magazine. I think your site is great, kudos, really (even though I disagree with you as far as what rates as a Frat Pack movie and who are to be considered core members) and I would like to add my two cents.
But firstly, a piece of news: I can tell you that The Wendell Baker Story was released directly on DVD on 1 February, 2006 in Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia. I have it, and I have seen it. A couple of times. I think it's really good, but I don't think it would rate as a Frat Pack classic by your standards. It falls somewhere in between Bottle Rocket and a fairy tale. It has some flaws, obviously, but it is definitely original and a damn worthy first attempt by Luke as a writer and co-director. It has a very personal vision, I think. And it gives a shout out to the elderly in a real funny and heartwarming way, without ever getting sappy (you know the Wilsons, they loathe cheap sentiment). People who think plot is more important than character (people who like Academy Award-nominated movies like The Shawshank Redemption and anything directed by my fellow countryman Lasse Hallström, ew) will probably not enjoy it, though. You have to buy into the whole Luke and Owen deal to get something out of this, I think.
Now, to my take on the Frat Pack: the core members are Ben, Owen, Luke, Will, and Vince. Period. Jack is borderline, mainly because he's got his own thing going with Tenacious D, but I really thought Heat Vision and Jack was incredible, and if they ever turn it into a movie, he's onboard. But it feels as though it's up to Jack if he wants to get more involved. Think about it: Owen and Luke are as close as any brothers can get, Ben and Owen are very close, Luke and Will are very close, and Vince is everybody's buddy. So's Jack, but he's so into his own thing that he probably doesn't have time to be in more movies.
Steve Carrell on the other hand is NOT a Frat Pack member in my book. First off, because he's nobody's real buddy, but more of a regular colleague. Second off, because The 40-Year-Old Virgin is not a Frat Pack movie. To me, Frat Pack movies have got nothing to do with a certain "sensibility" (and even if they did, "Virgin" doesn't have it). It has to do with the bond between a group of friends that also enjoy and respect each other as professionals. It has to do with creating characters, pushing the frontiers of comedy forward, and it has heart, emotion, and a celebration of friendship at the core (which, in a meta context, is a celebration and reflection of their own friendship, I think). Even Zoolander had that, for all its whacky, surreal comedy. As did Tenenbaums, for that matter, and all the other Wes/Owen movies.
"Virgin" had none of that. It was OK, the way a regular sit com is OK - though nothing compared to Seinfeld - but it was situation-based comedy (and they didn't even explore the potential comedy of the situation very well), NOT character-driven, which is what the Frat Pack is all about: Ben comes from that, Will is all about that since his SNL days, Swingers and Bottle Rocket were really character-driven, if anything. So you see, to me it's not at all about cementing a certain Frat Pack-type of comedy, it's about these guys exploring different characters through different venues, which include both comedy and drama.
Don't get me wrong, I think Carrell is funny, he stole a lot of scenes in Anchorman and did so with honors (as oppose to Paul Rudd, who barely passed, and David Koechner, who just wasn't very funny in it), but he's got nothing to do with the Frat Pack. The way I see it, you have to be a buddy, and a real close one, to be in.
Having said all this, I really think you're doing a great job with the site. "I don't like you, but damn it, do I respect you!" If you get my saying ;)
Best regards,
Mario Bernengo

Dark Day as The Razzies Nominate Will Ferrell
Bewitched
was nominated five Razzie
Awards today. Nominations included Will Ferrell for Worst Actor (along
with his performance in Kicking & Screaming), Worst Director,
Worst Remake, Worst Screenplay (Adam McKay was nominated even though the Writers
Guild stripped him of credit on the screenplay).
Clearly, Bewitched was a flawed film, but how does this movie get five nominations
and none for Nicole Kidman who was truly awful in the movie. Ferrell was the
best thing about the movie, not the worst! The couple's Worst Screen Couple
nomination is an example of one part of the pair bringing down the other!

Carrell talks 'Almighty'
"Same director [Tom Shadyac], same writer [Steve Oedekerk], and I know
Tom Shadyac is hoping that it is a series," said the actor, 42, "and
then a couple of years down the road ... Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller
or somebody else, God comes to them and they need to achieve something and
sort of learn, and it'll be a very sweet movie. It'll be a nice family movie."
The movie, which isn't exactly a sequel, has the same "Morgan Freeman
of a God" summon Evan Baxter to build him an Ark. "And it sort of
starts from there," Carell says. "I think it will be hilarious.
I read the script, and it's really funny. ... He undergoes a learning curve,
emotionally and spiritually, in the building of this ark." (The

Steve Carell Wins Golden Globe, Thanks Wife in Riotous Acceptance
Speech
Steve
Carell won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series at tonight's Golden
Globe Awards. Carell plays Michael Scott, the obnoxious Regional Manager on
NBC's The Office. The win was a bit of an upset as many predicted
a win for Jason Lee of My Name is Earl.
When he collected his award, Carell said he hadn’t bothered to write an acceptance speech. Instead, he read one he claimed was written by his wife, Nancy Walls. It ignored his career and instead praised his wife, noting that she had put aside her career for his. "Wow, I really did not expect this so I didn't write anything, however my wife did and handed me something" Carell joked as he frequently mentioned "the love of my life, my wife, Nancy." "Nancy, my precious wife who put her career on hold in support of mine and who sometimes wishes that I would let her know when I'm going to be home late so she can schedule her life, which is no less important than mine," he said.
In other Globes news, Will Ferrell lost Best Supporting Actor to George Clooney.
Luke Wilson was a presenter as well.
