Podcast #175: Russell Brand Interview
Russell Brand is a wild, fast-talking comedian from the UK, introducing himself to US audiences in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  Brand plays Aldous Snow, a rock singer who has started dating Sarah Marshall, much to the horror of her ex-boyfriend Peter. Brand, a successful stand-up and tabloid sensation in the UK, is a unique sight to behold in person; A daunting mix of tall hair, chains, open shirts and his own self-declared “androgynous sexuality.”

The Frat Pack Tribute participated in a hilarious roundtable interview session with Brand during Los Angeles press day for Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  We did not know what to expect from Brand, and the following interview is one of the funniest we’ve been lucky to take part in.

Farrelly Bros eyeing Danny McBride for new comedy franchise?
by Rick Duran

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have broke the story that 20th Century Fox pre-emptively bought a script titled "Beaujolais," to be produced by Peter and Bobby Farrelly, possibly as a directing vehicle from them. According to Variety, "Project has been dubbed a redneck action-adventure with a protagonist along the lines of an Austin Powers or Ace Ventura." Hollywood Reporter adds that "the name describes a treasure-hunting character" and that "the studio sees the project as a franchise starter."

Interesting to note that when the article first went online, they mentioned the studio was looking to Danny McBride to star, but have since removed his name. McBride is a rising star on our radar, recently appearing in The Heartbreak Kid and Drillbit Taylor, and will be seen this summer in Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express, in addition to his indie film The Foot Fist Way; He is currently filming Land of the Lost with Will Ferrell. The Farrelly Brothers, who praised McBride's Foot Fist Way on The Heartbreak Kid DVD commentary, are excited about this new Beaujolais project; "We haven't stepped up and done something like us in a while," Bobby Farrelly said. "Everything sort of aligned for us on this project."

Juno I Love You Baby
by Jenny Spaulding

Ok, so that headline is cheesy, unoriginal, or stolen -- possibly all three. But it's still true. I loved Juno.

Did that love affair begin when I spotted director Jason Reitman's father Ivan, who helmed of one of my all time favorite films (Ghostbusters) and was to be the future producer of Old School, dining out at Universal's City Walk during a family vacation? Or was it when I stumbled across a spunky, young ex-stripper bantering with David Letterman back in March of 2006? It certainly wasn't when I first heard the story pitch for Juno: an unwed teenage girl plans to give her baby to a yuppie couple. Huh? This is going to be a comedy?

But as the festival circuit buzz built, so did my anticipation to see Juno. When I finally did see it last December, I was thrilled that it was the first comedy I'd seen in months (say, since Superbad) that had more than exceeded my high expectations for it. Every line and performance was pitch perfect.

For the last few years, there seems to be one smaller film that touches a nerve with me more than all other many movies I see--and I see a lot. There's been Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, Sideways, and more recently, Little Miss Sunshine. They often go on to be sleeper hits at the box office and critics' darlings. They begin to generate Oscar buzz (and sometimes Oscar backlash). This year it seemed inevitable that Diablo Cody's screenplay would be nominated. It brims with sharp, hip dialog that comfortably and quickly shifts between the hilarious and the heartfelt. Reading her stripping memoir Candy Girl, you get a sense of what a fierce and fearless chick Diablo truly is. The book manages to be both bawdy and naughty while telling an enticing fish out of water adventure that seems destined for a big screen as well.

So no, it wasn't surprising that Juno's screenplay was nominated for Best Screenplay. It wasn't even that shocking when Ellen Page was nominated as Best Actress since there is often a dearth of Oscar-worthy female leads and this was quite a break through role. (Although if you've seen her in Hard Candy, you know she's astoundingly talented.)

I thought nominations for Best Picture and Director were a little more surprising, but ones that were well deserved. And Juno definitely became this seasons' most impressive money maker, easily raking in over twice as much as its four Best Picture competitors. It became a wonderful word of mouth success that charmed many and even generated a top-selling soundtrack.

Did I love this movie so much because part of me wanted to be Juno? Not the being knocked up part, but I wish I were the hip and sassy girl with the sharply honed sense of humor, the one who always has the snappy retort and wields word plays like weapons. No matter what the reason is, I loved this movie. If you didn't catch Juno in the theater, I recommend checking out the DVD. Currently, both the single disc versions and the double disc one which includes a digital version are part of the top ten sellers on Amazon.com. You're going to love it, honest to blog!

E! Debuts Respectful True Hollywood Story about Luke and Owen Wilson
by Kevin Crossman

We think we do a pretty good job covering what's happening with our beloved Fratters, but it's clear we're not always on our A-game. Point of fact: we have no idea E! was running a True Hollywood Story about Luke and Owen Wilson. Thankfully, Bonniech from our message boards was on the spot with this review:

When I first heard about this I rolled my eyes because E! has the tendency to sensationalize their stories and I figured the Wilson's were given this "honor" only because of Owen's troubles. With that said I watched this tonight and was quite impressed. They were very sensitive over Owen's situation and didn't promote the "rumors" out there which was a pleasant and welcomed surprise. If you didn't catch it I suggest you do, then share your thoughts and see if you agree.

Some random thoughts:

Thanks Bonnie. The show did do a credible job covering the brothers. They even mentioned the Frat Pack, though interestingly there was nary a mention of Steve Carell (understandable) or Jack Black (glaring omission - Bongwater anyone?).

This episode of E! True Hollywood Story will be re-running throughout the weekend.

Music Video for Forgetting Sarah Marshall
by Adam Stevenson

EW.com has posted a hilarious music video for Russel Brand's character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Aldous Snow of Infant Sorrow, called "We've Got to Do Something." Infant Sorrow also has a MySpace page.

The new tie-in music video for the movie suggests why, as the cheeky, overwrought song finds the smug Snow prances around on a busy street and standing in a public transportation terminal and singing to passersby about the world's injustices, while holding up signs that say "False untruths kill" and "Sodomize intolerance." It also features him dry humping the marble floor of the terminal and groping a nun.

This is probably something we will find on the DVD. But here it is for you viewing pleasure.

Cars Sequel Set for 2012 Release
by Kevin Crossman

Funny how we get another Disneyland related story today. Today, Disney announced their slate of upcoming Disney, Pixar, and Home Video releases for the next several years. Notably, a sequel to Cars is set for a summer 2012 release. The original 2006 film grossed $244 million domestically and starred Owen Wilson as the voice of Lightning McQueen. Plus, the merchandise for the film has done very well, far better than other Disney properties such as Pirates of the Caribbean.

Some you may recall the big Pirates premieres held at Disneyland Park. Well, it just so happens that Disney has recently announced a major rennovation of Disney's California Aventure Park in Anaheim, with a Cars-themed land slated to open... yes, in 2012. So, it doesn't take a genius to guess where the premiere is likely to be held.

There is no official word on casting but Wilson is expected to reprise his role as the red race car. Disney did indicate that new characters would be expected for the sequel and it would shock me if they didn't pay homage to some other funny racers.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story in Stores Today
by Kevin Crossman

Every Frat Pack fan should "walk hard" to stores today to pick up John C. Reilly's musical masterpiece, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Produced and cowritten by Judd Apatow, and directed by Jake Kasdan, Walk Hard mixes parody of the musical biopic with elements of straight farce and a tad bit of drama. We loved this movie and thought it was one of the best of 2007!

The movie tanked at the box office, so now is your chance to show the film some love. Pick it up in stores today!

We recommend the Unrated 2-Disc DVD or Blu-Ray edition of Walk Hard. There is also a single-disc DVD offering with the R-rated theatrical cut and UMD version for play on the Sony PSP. Among the host of special features on the set is over 30 minutes of new footage and full song performances.

Frat Pack Tribute Review: Forgetting Sarah Marshall ()
by Rick Duran

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the latest product from Team Apatow, in which Jason Segel leads a talented ensemble through a series of uncomfortable moments and broad laughs.  Set around a poorly-timed trip to Hawaii, this amusing film allows star and writer Segel to successfully introduce himself to the audience, while following a familiar formula and appeal that has crafter yet another winner.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall takes a mundane plot, crafting it into the funniest film so far this year.

The film is a smart mix of R-Rated laughs, awkward sex and natural charm that delivers from start to finish.  It’s exciting to watch Segel, yet another largely-unknown face from Judd’s vault, emerge as one of Hollywood’s top new talents.  It shows that this type of sex comedy is still viable, and we can’t wait to see who will be the next funny co-star given a shot at the comedy steering wheel.

Best Halloween News Since Boingo Broke Up
by Kevin Crossman

I went to college in the 1980's and Oingo Boingo's Halloween shows were legendary. Now, comes word of perhaps the best time anyone could ask for come October 31st.

I'm a big fan of the the-frat-pack.com. I check it on a regular basis and even cited it for a speech on The Frat Pack in my Public Speaking class last year in college. Anyway I haven't seen anything about the release of Zack and Miri on the website so I figured I'd let you know the date. Zack and Miri Make A Porno is set for release in the United States on October 31, 2008. Also, here is the official website. It has a few new pictures from the movie and a pretty cool logo for the film.

Anyway thanks for creating the-frat-pack.com and keep up the good work.
Murph

Thanks, Murph. Zack and Miri looks like a hoot and we happen to love Elizabeth Banks maybe more than Seth Rogen. So, we're definitely looking forward to the latest comedy from Kevin Smith.

Leslie Mann "Loves" Jim Carrey
by Rick Duran

This is a big project for Leslie Mann:

Leslie Mann is joining Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in the black comedy "I Love You Phillip Morris." Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the scribes behind "Bad Santa," are directing.

The story follows a married father (Carrey) who is sent to prison and falls in love with a cellmate named Phillip Morris. His love leads him to make several escape attempts. Mann will play Carrey's wife.

Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar is producing with Far Shariat. Luc Besson's EuropaCorp. is fully financing, and Besson is executive producing. Production begins later this month. (Hollywood Reporter)

Meanwhile, our tipster Adam Stevenson says that the Untitled Judd Apatow production starring Mann, Seth Rogen, and Adam Sandler is now targeting a July 31, 2009 release date.

Ben Stiller Issues Statement About Nick Stevens
by Rick Duran

As we reported earlier, Ben Stiller has left United Talent Agency and will be following Nick Stevens to Endeavor.

Yesterday Ben issued a statement through his publicist: "I think Nick Stevens is a unique entity in this business: an agent with integrity, a point of view, and most of all, humanity. He's Jerry Maguire at the end of the movie. I would be with him if he was working out of the Sunglass Hut at the Beverly Center."

Also, StarPulse has an article about the Frat Pack ("The Frat Pack: Pledging to Make Audiences Laugh"), including a list of the Top 10 Frat Pack Quotes.

Podcast #171: Jason Segel Interview
Jason Segel is the latest Freaks and Geeks alum given the chance to headline his own film, under the watchful eye of producer Judd Apatow.  Audiences are most familiar with Segel from his role as Seth Rogen’s roommate in Knocked Up, and his weekly role on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. This time, Segel leads an all-star cast in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which he also wrote the screenplay for.

The Frat Pack Tribute had a chance to sit down with Segel during the film’s press day roundtable session, including hilarious discussions about Dracula, Muppets and penises. You read that right.

Hollywood Agency Shuffle: UTA Continues to Lose the Pack
by Rick Duran, Senior Editor

Three weeks ago, we reported on Vince Vaughn's exit from the United Talent Agency (which lost Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey in the past 24 months.) Now, Nikki Finke's DeadlineHollywoodDaily is reporting that UTA is losing one of its key partners, Nick Stevens, the man who helped nurture the careers of many of our beloved comedy stars. Stevens, agent of clients Ben Stiller, Judd Apatow, Owen Wilson and Jack Black, will leave UTA for the Endeavor agency. Stiller is the first major client to announce he will follow Stevens to Endeavor.

Why is this story important to our readers? Stevens is one of the architects of our so-called Frat Pack. His style of agenting is setting up clients like Stiller and Apatow with the authority to write/direct/produce projects and package them with co-stars from the same shared management. In other words, you know how these comedies share so many cast members? That's no coincidence, it's a business model fueled by creative freedom that generates profit. The jump to Endeavor only broadens the potential pairings down the line.

For one agency to lose major stars like Stiller, Vaughn, Ferrell and Carrey signals frustration with UTA's business dealings (such as the Used Guys debacle.) Similarly, Stiller's following Stevens shows just how influential the agent is in setting up Ben Stiller vehicles like Tropic Thunder and Zoolander, arranging deals where the star operates with unprecendented independence from studios. The same can be said for fellow Stevens client Judd Apatow, who has the rare freedom of making movies with own brand of actors, directors and writers. These guys have had their careers guided for over a decade, each step carefully calculated, bringing results that we ultimately purchase.

Does this development really mean the old days of the Pack are over? Six years ago, they were all housed at UTA (Stiller, Vaughn, Ferrell, Black, Owen, Judd), now they've split. I think the point isn't about broadening the Circle, but rather that a new Pack may emerge.

But, and I had to dig through our research database to find this, who else is housed at Endeavor? Steve Carell.

Gretchen Mol Joins Luke Wilson on Tenure
by Kevin Crossman

Count us giddy as a school-girl over the latest news for the professor romcom that's starring Luke Wilson and costarring David Koechner. First, Philly.com is reporting that Wilson and Koecher have been hitting the town:

Luke Wilson and David Koechner, here shooting the film Tenure, raised a stir by dropping in for dinner at Amada in Old City on Tuesday. After, they cabbed to Xochitl on Head House Square for beers.

Next, and even more important, Variety is reporting that Gretchen Mol will star opposite Wilson in Blowtorch Entertainment's collegiate laffer about two professors competing for the same permanent spot on the roster. Koecher plays Wilson's sidekick colleague.

We praised Mol's segment in The Ten, and she was excellent in The Notorious Betty Page. She definitely has a friendly Kate Hudson-style sass that always compliments Luke Wilson (see also: Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore, Eva Mendes).

Podcast #171: Kristen Bell Interview
Kristen Bell is one of the fastest rising female stars in Hollywood. From her critically acclaimed former show Veronica Mars to a wildly popular guest stint on NBC’s Heroes, Bell is now moving on to the film world as the title character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the latest R-Rated romp from Judd Apatow’s comedy goldmine.

The Frat Pack Tribute had a chance to participate in the film’s press day roundtable session with Ms. Bell as she discussed her Hawaii adventures with Jason Segel and Russell Brand, in addition to her many other projects. We were also fortunate enough to witness an emotional moment as she discussed the cancellation of Veronica Mars and her relationship with the cast.

Pineapple Express Poster
by Kevin Crossman

Thanks to many of you who sent this one in. Here's a great one-sheet for Pineapple Express. That's Danny McBride alongside Seth Rogen and James Franco, which kind of seems strange since there are only two names above the title (and Danny's isn't one of them).

If the poster seems familiar, perhaps you might have seen the poster it is trying to parody.

Ad Campaign for Forgetting Sarah Marshall Hits Full Swing
by Kevin Crossman

The unusual but memorable marketing campaign for Forgetting Sarah Marshall is making a big impact. Our New York editor Jenny Spaulding snapped a couple shots of the posters "in the wild."

Of course, the ads play off the ever expanding empire of fake websites related to the upcoming "disaster" comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

The campaign seems to so realistic and believable that the posters are causing ire by women who are actually named Sarah Marshall. That's Sarah Marshall of Manhattan below, as profiled by an article in the New York Daily News. Thankfully, the real life Sarah Marshalls seem to have a good sense of humor about Sarah Marshall.

NBC Announces The Office Spinoff
by Kevin Crossman

Well, this certainly set the blogosphere on fire... NBC announced their fall schedule and included in the mix was a series called The Office Spinoff, which seems to be just that. A spinoff of the Steve Carell comedy. The series will be produced by the current creative team from The Office but other than that there are nary details.

Given that spinoffs have at best a spotty track record, many Office fans are upset. The best rant we've seen so far comes from Matt Sommer over at That's What She Said. Matt says:

"It just makes me incredibly sad to think that one of the best shows on TV is going to screwed with in this way. Will I watch the new show? Of course. Maybe I'll even love it. But right now, it just worries me more than anything else." (That's What She Said)

Other bloggers were more optimistic. At Life in the Office they said:

"Another Office quality show?! This news is BANANAS, B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!!" (Life in the Office)

And what do we think about this over at the Tribute? Well, we'd hate to see any of The Office regulars farmed out to a spinoff, so no "Dwight Show" please. At the same time we'd probably hate even more one of those faux-spinoffs where they introduce brand new characters on an episode of your favorite show and then create a series around them.

What they need to do is build a new show around a slightly familiar character or supporting player and build the show around those characters. And when I think of The Office the best example of this kind of character is the one played by everyone's favorite Frat Pack pinch hitter, "Champ" Kind himself, David Koechner. Koechner's Office character Todd Packer has been a favorite of mine and certainly would be a different kind of "boss" than Steve Carell's Michael Scott.

What's Happening with Fanboys?
by Jenny Spaulding

A couple of years ago I got hooked on Kristen Bell's TV show Veronica Mars. I was impressed with her performance and style and sought out as much of her filmography as I could. One upcoming film listed on her IMDB page was Fanboys about a group of friends who decide to steal Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace from George Lucas so one of their buddies can see the film before he succumbs to cancer. At the time, the other co-stars of the movie didn't mean much to me: Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, and Dan Fogler. But now, two years later, they sure do!

Fanboys seems destined to go the way of Paul Rudd's I Could Never Be Your Woman as it's been sitting on a shelf for quite some time. There's been a lot of scuttlebutt on the web so who knows what's true, but it seems Judd Apatow's producing partner, Shauna Robertson was brought it to help tweak the movie, killing the cancer subplot, so to speak. Or maybe it's Harvey Weinstein who was scared off by the cancer story line. Drillbit Taylor director Steven Brill apparently helmed the reshoots, causing additional fan ire. Now they seem to be test-marketing both versions to decide which one to go with for a potential theatrical release. Supposedly both would end up as DVD release.

But rabid fans have been causing a ruckus and demand the original cut be released. They've staged protests and started a website StopDarthWeinstein.com (which currently doesn't seem active.)

So for now, we'll have to wait and see and try to be satisfied that Bell stars along with Judd cohort Jason Segel in the upcoming Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She'll also appear with Will Arnett, Jon Heder, and Dax Shepard in the newly announced comedy When in Rome.

Ben Stiller's Fantasy World in The Return of King Doug
by Rick Duran

Ben Stiller is attached to produce and possibly star in The Return of King Doug, an adaptation of an upcoming Oni Press graphic novel whose film rights were picked up by DreamWorks.

Written by Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, "King" centers on a man who must return to the fantasy world which he abandoned 30 years earlier. Erb and Oremland will also write the screenplay.

Stiller, Stuart Cornfeld and Jeremy Kramer will produce through their DreamWorks-based Red Hour Productions. (Hollywood Reporter)

Plain and simple. I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence" Well I made up a "I piss excellence" Logo and had it put on a few dozen golf balls. So I just wanted to let you know and see what you think. I know there are a lot of t-shirt sites that do this and I just thought I would try something different.

French Fan Blogging The Frat Pack

Anyway, we received this nice note from a French Frat Pack fan.

I'm a fan of the Frat Pack (and Judd Apatow) since I've seen Anchorman, after that I tryed to see all of their other movies and that just confirmed the fact that I really love all they do.

The problem is I'm french, and as you may know the band is not very famous here. A movie such as Superbad doesn't stay more than two weeks in theatres. A shame, isn't it? And maybe I shouldn't talk to you about the stupid french titles of these movie (Blades of Glory becomes Les Rois du Patin, which just sounds like a lame comedy for children), or the DVD editions in which all the bonus material just stayed on your side of the Atlantic Ocean.

So I created a blog a few months ago, where I try to bring all the possible news regarding american comedies. The Frat Pack Tribute is of course one of my biggest inspiration as I try to check it every day. So I just wanted you to know about this effort to make french people understand this kind of comedies, and maybe hoping that, if you like it, you would just mention my blog on your website !

Land of the Lost Set Photos
by Drew Hunt

Slashfilm has first look at Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost, currently filming in Los Angeles. The story gives a little more plot detail.

Ferrell plays Dr. Marshall, a wacky scientist who ends up the laughingstock of the scientific community after attacking the quadriplegic and wheelchair-bound Stephen Hawking while being interviewed on Anderson Cooper 360. Dr. Marshall is reduced to becoming a tour guide at the La Brea Tar Pits, the only scientific job that would take him. The first look photo above is taken just before a young hit scientist played by Anna Friel convinces Dr. Marshall to go with her on an expedition which no doubt takes him to the Land of the Lost.

Karen Pok found a new article with more set photos. Land of the Lost is currently targeting a July 17, 2009 release date.

Semi-Pro DVD Artwork
by Kevin Crossman

Faster than you can say fast break, here's the artwork for the two-disc unrated "Let's Get Sweaty Edition" of Semi-Pro, arriving in stores on June 3rd. Yes, the same Semi-Pro that opened in theatres less than a month ago. DVD Active also has the artwork for the single-disc and BluRay editions, but no details on the content or extras. (thanks John Avs...)

Owen's Fans Love Drillbit Taylor; General Public not so much...
by Kevin Crossman

Drillbit Taylor finished in fourth place this weekend, taking in $10.3 million at the box office. That's not awful but definitely disappointing from a business standpoint.

That said, Drillbit is definitely getting some love from Owen's hardcore fanbase:

As for me, I gotta say I liked Drillbit Taylor a lot. Much more than Semi-Pro. This might as well be called Dupree 2 because it is exactly the same character for Owen. But he's very charming and I enjoyed a lot of the movie.

I sure hope Seth Rogen is working on a script that doesn't include the same three characters from his previous movie, because these kids aren't much different from the trio from Superbad. That said, Troy Gentile surely will be cast as the baby brother if The Middle Child ever gets made. He's great and is cut from the same Rogen/Hill cloth. Can't wait for his first movie with R-rated dialogue (not lipsynced, as in Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny) .

Leslie Mann doesn't have a lot to do here, but there are some good moments (I expect to see some deleted scenes with her character). Danny McBride is pretty good as a sort-of an antagonist plot-wise. David Koechner does appear and has about one line. Matt Walsh also cameos and has a nice appearance. Ian Roberts has a larger role and a couple funny scenes. Matt Besser from Walk Hard has a cameo too.

Not sure how much women will like this movie, unless they're Owen Wilson fans. But as a guy who let's just say wasn't a bully as a kid, I very much enjoyed Drillbit Taylor. Definitely some funny stuff, though there wasn't any really big "set-piece" comedy bit (ala Dodge a Wrench, or Baby Jesus). But lots of smiles throughout.

Owen Wilson Shines in The Darjeeling Limited on DVD
by Amy Gilbert

This is a must have for all those Owen Wilson, Wes Anderson fans. The DVD includes the companion short film Hotel Chevalier and a 21 minute Behind-The-Scenes Documentary. Those who saw this in the theatre will be in awe of the time, effort and attention to detail Wes Anderson puts into his films. I guarantee if you saw his in the theatre you will catch a lot that was missed the first viewing.

The documentary features an up-close look at the outside of the train - The Darjeeling Limited. It is painted with scenes from the movie. Also included was a quick look at Owen, balancing while walking the straight-and-narrow train tracks, telling the camera, "I have a one track mind. It kind of comes in handy."

I must admit, I was a little disappointed not to find dirctors/actors commentary or even a paper insert in the case. (I had high hopes for something laminated.) Even the DVD itself is simple, plain and yellow.

Frat Pack Tribute Review: Drillbit Taylor ()
by Drew Hunt

Make no mistake about it -- Judd Apatow has ballsy comedies at an all-time high. His hard R romps are raking in the dough, with audience and critical acclaim to boot. The newest venture under the Apatow name is the Owen Wilson vehicle Drillbit Taylor, a film featuring three high school freshman and their attempts to thwart a couple of bullies by enlisting the help of "bodyguard", Drillbit Taylor, skilfully portrayed by the veteran farceur Wilson.

The fact remains that nobody is better at being Owen Wilson than Owen Wilson, and Owen Wilson is damn hilarious. As Drillbit Taylor, there's no exception. In fact, he's something of a revelation here, making a mountain of a character out of a molehill of a script.

He certainly upstages his fellow Frat Pack brethren (and sharer of similar criticisms) Will Ferrel in this newest flock of solo films. Compared to Semi-Pro, Drillbit Taylor looks like a masterpiece.

David Cross and Bob Odenkirk reuniting for new HBO series
by Josh Watts

Frat Pack friends Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, known for their previous HBO series Mr. Show with Bob and David, (which helped to launch Jack Black's and Tenacious D's career) have reunited, this time for an all-new series.

The working title is David's Situation, and it will utilize a traditional sitcom format rather than the sketch comedy format of Mr. Show. Though created for HBO, which doesn't run advertisements during its programming, the show will feature "ad breaks" containing fake product advertisements, which are likely to be similar to the types of sketches featured on their first show. David Cross has recently mentioned the show being picked up in a blog on Bob and David's website.

Cross and Odenkirk's 2002 film Run Ronnie Run featured cameos from Jack Black and Ben Stiller.

Owen Wilson's Drillbit Taylor Opens Today
by Kevin Crossman

Okay, Frat Pack fans, here we go with another solo release from one of our cinema heroes.

Drillbit Taylor stars Owen Wilson as a homeless con-man who is hired by three high school freshman to be their bodyguard. While in their employ, he goes undercover as a teacher and falls for a "fellow" teacher played by Leslie Mann. With familiar faces like Troy Gentile, Danny McBride, and Stephen Root, the film written by Seth Rogen and produced by Judd Apatow should be a must see.

Of course, the box office prospects are hurt by Owen's lack of participation in the film's publicity. As noted in an article at The Huffington Post, "So rather than put Wilson together with television or print reporters, Paramount had the actor record "Drillbit"-themed introductions to Fox's Sunday-night prime-time lineup. Paramount said Wilson has done all that the studio has asked of him, and his publicist said the actor's availability was affected by "Marley & Me," an upcoming movie Wilson is currently shooting in Florida."

The reviews for the movie haven't been great but you know what? I'm really looking forward to the movie. We'll have our review in a day or two, but in the meantime let us know what you think of Drillbit Taylor.

Judd Apatow Profile from USA Today
by Kevin Crossman

Our friends at USA Today are back with a great article about Judd Apatow. The article covers Apatow production Drillbit Taylor opening this weekend, but upcoming filmes Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, and Pineapple Express.

Apatow also addresses the box office flop Walk Hard:

Apatow blames bad timing. "When we picked the date (Dec. 21), there wasn't a lot opening," he says. "But then, hey, they put Sweeney Todd on that date and Charlie Wilson's War. And it was a week after I Am Legend came out."

We don't agree. While it's true the film had a lot of competition, there are lots of tickets purchased during Christmas season. Another reason for the poor reception? Well, let's just say that we have our own theories:

His mix of sex, swearing and silly antics has yet to bore fans, says Kevin Crossman, ringleader of the Frat Pack Tribute website. Judging by the response to the upcoming trailers, "People are still jazzed about this stuff." The key: Work that adult rating, baby. "R-rated romps have to look and act like R-rated romps," while Walk Hard was dismissed as R-lite.

So, to summarize. We think Walk Hard was a great movie that wasn't marketed well. And, yeah, Apatow has a great track record and we're looking forward to his films this year.

Vince Vaughn fires manager (and Frat Pack architect) Eric Gold
by Rick Duran

While we rarely cover behind the scenes squabbling, Deadline Hollywood Daily broke the story that Vince Vaughn fired his manager Eric Gold and left his talent agency UTA. Variety later revealed that Vince's exit was largely fueled by the box office disaster for Fred Claus, which the star was $20 million for. Vince signed with Gold after his film Domestic Disturbance, and thus the management revived his career with his Frat Pack films such as Old School and Dodgeball.

Why is this story so significant to us? As detailed in a 2005 New York Times article, our beloved comedy clique all shared the same management: interconnected through managers Eric Gold and Jimmy Miller. When their partnership and shared clients ended in 2006, coincidentally so did the co-headlining Frat Pack films. If you look at that NY Times "Wheel of Comedy" carefully, you'll notice who still shares representation: Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Black at UTA; Ferrell, McKay and Apatow with Miller.

Late news today revealed that Vince Vaughn signed with the CAA agency (whom previously scooped up former UTA clients Ferrell and Jim Carrey.) Ultimately, this should bode well for Vaughn, as CAA is viewed as the best agency in Hollywood. But keep in mind, this behind the scenes drama coincides all too perfectly with the lack of co-headlining Frat Pack films. The Variety article also states that Warner Bros is actively pursuing the long-rumored Wedding Crashers sequel. With new representation for Vince, that project might not be so impossible anymore...

Regal Cinemas will cater to dirty-minded audiences (i.e.: you and me)
by Rick Duran

I think we can all agree that the "green-band" trailers for Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Pineapple Express lack the appeal of their redband counterparts. In some cases (Semi-Pro, Walk Hard), R-Rated films suffer at the box office because their theatrical trailers aren't allowed to show how explicit their content actually is. Truth be told, all of film-going America doesn't visit The-Frat-Pack.com where they can see all the hilarious "redband" trailers (shocking, I know right?!)

Regal Cinemas will have the balls to finally change that. As a matter of fact, said testicles might even appear onscreen. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Regal Entertainment Group, the nation's largest theater chain, has decided to permit restricted, "red band" trailers in its multiplexes.

Studios once used red band trailers routinely, but theaters dropped them like hot potatoes after a 2000 Federal Trade Commission report criticizing the entertainment industry for marketing violent entertainment to children. The Reporter states Regal's decision making was largely influenced last summer when Sony said it would have liked to screen a red band trailer for Superbad in front of Uni's Knocked Up.

This is great news for our readers, as many of our most anticipated 2008 films such as Tropic Thunder, Step Brothers, Sarah Marshall and Pineapple Express will be Rated R. Watching the redband trailers with a full audience will only build the anticipation for these films (assuming they sell their product better than the misguided Semi-Pro R-Rated trailer.)

Speaking of trailers, the trailer for a little film called Tropic Thunder (perhaps you've heard of it) is scheduled to drop today. Keep checking for updates.

Horton Hears a Who! Review ()
by Drew Hunt

Doubters of the newest Seuss adaption, Horton Hears a Who!, can rest easy, as this animated feature is far and away the best, and the closest to bringing the good Dr.'s message to life. Horton is a shining success and the first great animated film of 2008.

One of the film's biggest narrative changes comes in the transformation or Dr. Hoovey into the cheerful, desperately busy, increasingly addled Mayor of Who-ville, voiced refreshingly by Steve Carrel. The actor's talent of playing a manic personality seems tailor-made for the Mayors looming dilemma: nobody in the town believes him when he says certain doom and destruction is on the way, and the only thing keeping them alive is an invisible elephant in the sky. As you can probably imagine, he's yelling a lot.

Although the movies main theme of "A person is a person no matter how small" has been subject to many an interpretation (and sometimes in a tacky manner), the movie is very clear in its intentions. In a subtle yet effective way, the central message says simply that one should not be deaf to other people's realities, no matter how insignificant, or invisible, one may perceive them to be. In the end, it's a heartwarming and guileless experience for young audiences and their adult chaperons alike.

by Kevin Crossman

Just a reminder that Jonah Hill (Superbad) will be hosting Saturday Night Live tonight with musical guest Mariah Carrey. Hill had originally been tapped to host in November, but that show was delayed due to the writers strike.

SNL is on the cover of Entertainment Weekly this week and the cover story is an excellent read. The story features the behind the scenes process of putting together last week's show with host Amy Adams (Talladega Nights).

Steve Carell and Friends Launch Horton Hears a Who Today
by Kevin Crossman

We don't normally cover kids films around here. Unless of course one of our Frat Pack heroes is starring. Steve Carell and Jim Carrey headline Horton Hears a Who, opening today. Also on board are a host of familar faces voices: Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Isla Fisher.

A CGI-animated adventure based on the 1954 Dr Seuss with Steve voicing the mayor of Who-ville. The story follows a loveable elephant, Horton (Jim Carrey), who hears voices coming from a speck of dust. Horton does everything in his power to save the tiny community. Horton struggles to protect the microscopic community from his neighbors who refuse to believe it exists. Steve Carell voices the Mayor of Who-ville, a distinguished figure of a very small size, too small to be seen by the elephant's eyes.

The overall theme: A person is a person no matter how small.

Watered Down Pineapple Express Trailer Debuts
by Kevin Crossman

So, we've covered something for the kids, now something for the adults. The all-audiences trailer for the Seth Rogen / James Franco stoner-action-comedy Pineapple Express debuted yesterday.

Now, if you saw the footage from the Superbad DVD, or the restricted audiences red-band trailer you know all about what "pineapple express" is in Pineapple Express (hint: leafy, green, and illegal). Of course, if you watch the new trailer and you're kind of a "dope" you might even miss that fact. Maybe Rogen's character just likes to smoke cigarettes, right?

In any case, go check out the Pineapple Express trailer.

Ben Stiller Teases Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape
by Kevin Crossman

Ben Stiller hosts a nice preview of the Madagascar sequel in a DVD extra for The Bee Movie. This is a pretty good preview of the movie and it's nice to see Ben doing his thing in "kid mode" after all the recent R-Rated Tropic Thunder hype these days. Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape is coming to theatres in November 2008. Rumors indicate the subtitle might be changed to Escape to Africa.

Segel and Stoller to Make Next Muppets Movie?
by Kevin Crossman

Apparently Jason Segel is a big Muppets fan (evidence: the recent video over on ilovesarahmarshall.com). Now comes word that Segel will be writing and his Forgetting Sarah Marshall buddy Nick Stoller will be directing the next Muppet movie.

In "Sarah Marshall" Segel's character writes a "Dracula" musical performed by puppets. Those cloth creatures were custom-made by the Henson puppeteers, and the experience emboldened Segel to pitch his concept for a Muppets movie when he was invited in for a general meeting with exec Kristin Burr. Segel got a deal in the room and enlisted Stoller to co-write and direct the project. (Variety)

Thanks to Adam and Mike for heads-up on today's stories.

Tropic Thunder Trailer Report from ShoWest
by Rick Duran

There was some footage shown last night at the ShoWest convention, as reported on JoBlo.com.

That link includes spoilers of the trailer and two actual scenes. We're talking major spoilers. Hilarious spoilers. "I'm gonna punch a hole through the wall for not being August yet" spoilers.

For the sake of people remaining spoiler-free, I'll leave them behind the link. What I will post is the quoted banter between Stiller and Downey as they introduced the clips.

The most fun thing about doing this job is being able to come to you guys and share with you something I'm really excited about and I'm sure you'll dig (like the 300 or IRON MAN footage at Comic-Con). I'm thrilled to be able to tell you tonight that I've seen the future: and the future is TROPIC THUNDER.

Paramount hosted a special TROPIC THUNDER party at ShoWest today with Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. on hand to introduce the trailer and two clips from the film. The duo was introduced to the intimate crowd and instead of just going through the motions, they launched into some classic banter I wish I had on tape. Stiller congratulated Downey, Jr. on playing a superhero in IRON MAN but reminded him that he did it first in MYSTERY MEN. Downey, Jr. says "What the hell is MYSTERY MEN?" claiming he had never even heard of it. To which Stiller retorts, "Yeah, you were probably in jail at the time." Classic. This went on for a few more minutes as the two traded verbal barbs and cracked up the crowd. They wondered where co-stars Jack Black and Steve Coogan were (Black was in Louisiana shooting YEAR ONE while Coogan was in Las Vegas, which led Stiller to quip, "he's probably too fucked up." He made clear he was just joking...) Then it was time for the trailer.

Two More Tropic Thunder Photos Released

Seth Rogen and Will Arnett Lend Voices... Again
by Adam Stevenson

Another Frat Pack Family Film is on its way again... in 3-D! That's right, Dreamworks Animation is coming out with Monsters vs. Aliens in Ultimate 3-D. The film features the voices of: Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert, Kiefer Sutherland, and Paul Rudd.

When California girl Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a "monster" named Ginormica. The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound. The world learns that the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (voiced by Hugh Laurie); the macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Li nk (voiced by Will Arnett); the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (voiced by Seth Rogen); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country.

As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland) (on a desperate order from The President (voiced by Stephen Colbert)), the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction.

As for Rudd and Wilson, Wilson will be the voice of the villainous alien overlord Gallaxhar, and Rudd will voice Susan's boyfriend, Derek.

Rogen and Arnett are currently featured in Horton Hears a Who, and both lent voices to summer tentpoles last summer. Rogen was featured in Shrek the Third and Arnett was heard in Ratatouille. Rogen has been quite busy, lending his voice to The Spiderwick Chronicles and Kung Fu Panda, opposite Jack Black.

All hell breaks loose March 27, 2009. My thoughts, this movie will be exciting to see in 3-D.

Judd Apatow's Next Writing/Directing Gig to Star Rogen, Mann... and Sandler
by Rick Duran

Variety is reporting on a forthcoming untitled movie written and directed by Judd Apatow. The plot is being kept under wraps but is said to be starring Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann (both from The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up) along with Adam Sandler (from the Apatow penned Don't Mess with the Zohan, coming this summer).

Not all the details are set. According to Variety, "Dealmaking is under way with his cast, and producing credits are still being worked out." The movie is a co-production of Universal (Knocked Up) and Sony (Superbad) and is expected to start filming in late summer or early fall.

Two companion website domains have launched that kind of tell the story of the movie:

Horton Hears a Who Premiere Crashed by Abortion Protesters
by Josh Watts

As TMZ is reporting:

All hell broke loose at the Hollywood premiere of "Horton Hears a Who!" today when a group of pro-lifers infiltrated the screening, then chanted anti-abortion slogans after the flick.

The theme of the movie is based on the motto: "After all, a person is a person, no matter how small." So the pro-lifers thought it was a good idea to use this theme to their advantage -- even though their complicated message was falling mostly on the ears of children.

The stars in attendance included Victoria Beckham and her three kids, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy, Steve Carell and all 12 contestants from "American Idol."

After the chanting ended, the group put red tape over their mouths that said "Life" on them, and paraded around the event.

Steve Carell

I'm not even going to begin to get into the abortion debate, because that's about the most complicated issue in politics. But chanting and protesting at a children's movie? I believe Will Arnett has two words to say to you.

Come on!!!

College RomCom for Luke Wilson and David Koechner
by Kevin Crossman

Variety is reporting on Luke Wilson's next movie, Tenure. The college comedy is written and directed by Mike Million and stars Wilson as a "a beleaguered college professor who competes for tenure with an impressive new female colleague." The female costar has yet to be cast.

Frequent Frat Pack friend David Koechner (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Get Smart) co-stars as Wilson's anthropology professor sidekick (think Rainn Wilson's role from My Super-Ex Girfriend). Shooting starts in April in Philadelphia.

It's hard to remember, but there was a time that Luke Wilson was gold in these sort of romantic comedies, but bad chemistry and poor scripts doomed Wilson's last two high-profile romcoms, My Super-Ex Girfriend with Uma Thurman and Blonde Ambition with Jessica Simpson. Let's hope they cast someone more in the mold of Reese Witherspoon or Kate Hudson. And let's hope this isn't another "payday" project for Wilson, who really needs a hit about now.

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston Filming Marley & Me in Miami
by Kevin Crossman

Not the biggest news in the world, but just thought I'd mention here that filming has begun for Marley & Me, starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. There are more photos as well.

Wilson plays a newspaper columnist in the film, and has recently visited the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Of course, the third major costar for the movie is the labrador retriever named Marley. The film is scheduled for a Christmas 2008 release.

Wow! The Tropic Thunder teaser site just launched and this is exactly what we need to tide us over until the trailer launches on March 17th. What a great teaser site. Creedence Clearwater Revival playing along with those choppers to set the tone of the Vietnam-era movie-within-a-movie.

First Official Tropic Thunder Image Blows Expectations Away. Trailer on March 17th
by Kevin Crossman

Well, this is pretty big news and considering the numerous submissions to our news desk people must be awfully excited about it. After all, we've been waiting a long time for the next project featuring multiple Frat Pack stars. Let's lay down what's happening with Ben Stiller's forthcoming action-comedy costarring Jack Black.

Entertainment Weekly made headlines across the internet today with an incredible preview article. Even more interesting was the image released, featuring Ben and Jack. Oh, and a third actor who seemed strangely familiar.

Yes, that's Robert Downey Jr. as Kirk Lazarus, "the greatest actor of his generation." Apparently the part in Tropic Thunder's movie-within-a-movie called for a black actor and rather than have the part rewritten Downey's character just decided to go with the whole black thing. Amazing.

Meanwhile, EW also dropped word that the trailer will debut on March 17th, nearly two weeks away and making for we're calling in these parts "two weeks of torture." Because knowing there is a trailer coming is far, far worse than not knowing at all.

The rest of the article is basically old-hat for Frat Pack fans, outlining the basic plot and reminding folks that this is Ben's first directing gig since Zoolander. Today is a great day for Frat Pack fans!

Seth Rogen to Observe and Report for Foot Fist Way Director
by Rick Duran

Big news this week from the newest wing of Hollywood's comedy clique. Monday saw the release of the redband trailer for The Foot Fist Way, starring Danny McBride (Drillbit Taylor, Heartbreak Kid, Tropic Thunder). Tuesday brought news that Will Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions (via Paramount Vantage) has moved Fist's release to the May 30th Memorial Day Weekend.

Today's big story is Foot Fist Way's director, Jody Hill (who spotted the blood stain in Superbad), will direct Seth Rogen this April in a new film called Observe and Report. The screenplay, also written by Hill, centers around Ronnie Barnhardt, "a deluded, self-important head of mall security who squares off in a turf war against the local cops."

In other Rogen news, USA Today debuted the first promotional photo and an article about his new film Zack and Miri Make A Porno, from director Kevin Smith. Meanwhile, Foot Fist star Danny McBride began filming Land of the Lost with Will Ferrell this past Monday, March 3rd.

Character Intros for Drillbit Taylor
by Kevin Crossman

This is some incredible stuff that Adam Stevenson set us hip to. Check out these great character intros for the kids from Owen Wilson's upcoming comedy, Drillbit Taylor.

Though these videos are a little "spoilery" they definitely made me more interested in the movie. If the character of Ryan looks familiar, you might remember the actor Troy Gentile playing a young version of Jack Black in both Nacho Libre and Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.

The Fate of HD-DVD. What it Means for Frat Pack Fans
by Anthony Jones

The fate of HD-DVD was sealed last month with the announcement that Toshiba would no longer promote nor manufacture HD-DVD discs. Over the past two years, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have been fighting to be the lead in high definition home entertainment, in a "format war" comparable to VHS vs. Betamax or DVD vs. Laserdisc. Unlike the VHS and Betamax "war," the studios were paid to take a side and their movies would not be released in the opposing format.

Sony Pictures is the main backer of Blu-Ray (abbreviated as BD) while Universal has been with HD-DVD since its conception (and Paramount signed an HD-DVD exclusivity deal last August). Toshiba's decision to discontinue the player is likely the result of Warner Brothers siding with Blu-Ray in January. What does the death of HD-DVD mean for Frat Pack fans?

Paramount/DreamWorks produces the most Frat Pack films. They and Universal have concluded they will begin to turn out BD discs now that HD-DVD is obsolete. It's expected that Old School, Anchorman, Blades of Glory, Knocked Up and other pictures from these companies will drop on Blu-Ray in late spring/early summer.

Currently, Microsoft is planning a Blu-Ray Player add-on for May to replace their HD-DVD add-ons (which can now be found at as low as $40 in price). Meanwhile, Talladega Nights and Night at the Museum are currently available on BD. Tune into hidefdigest.com for future updates.

Jack Black Stars in Forthcoming Video Game
by Josh Watts

Brütal Legend, video game starring Jack Black, was apparently announced back in October, but I just heard about it today. It's a story-driven video game starring Jack Black about a heavy metal band's roadie who getssucked into a world of metal by a cursed belt buckle he acquires. This is being developed by Tim Schafer, a highly respected game designer praised for his work on LucasArts graphic adventures Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, and the mind-trip platformer Psychonauts.

The best thing about these is that, along with being acclaimed for their game design, all of these games are known for their deep storylines and great sense of humor. Full Throttle has been in my all-time Top 5 since I played it back over ten years ago.

The idea of a Tim Schafer game starring Jack Black that's based in a tongue-in-cheek world of metal has me ultra-excited. It's expected in 2008, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The most cohesive coverage of the game as of now seems to be its wikipedia article:

Another Tortured Romance for Stoller and Segel
by Adam Stevenson

I found out a new Apatow project from Universal involving Jason Segel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nick Stoller called Five-Year Engagement. It sounds a little bit like Segel's upcoming projects Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You, Man.

Judd Apatow will produce with Shauna Robertson reteams the studio with the duo behind the upcoming comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall: writer-director Nick Stoller and writer-star Jason Segel.

The story, described as a bawdy, couples comedy, charts the five-year engagement of a man (Segel) and his fiancee, following the ups and downs of their relationship.

Stoller and Segel, who met while working on Apatow's TV series "Undeclared," will write Five-Year Engagement together. Stoller, who made his feature helming debut with Sarah Marshall, is attached to direct, and Segel is set to star.

I am Angry. I'm Like a Tornado of Anger
by Kevin Crossman

Rather than use a baskeball metaphor like everyone like everyone else ("air ball") I'm harkening back to a catch-phrase from one of Will Ferrell's pervious sports comedies, Kicking & Screaming. Why? Because Semi-Pro underperformed at the box office this weekend. Big time. With expectations of about a $30 million opening weekend, Semi-Pro actually made about $15 million.

Of course, fatigue of Ferrell-sports comedies is an issue, as is the film's R rating. But I really don't see why this film would perform so much worse than Blades of Glory. Are people too busy watching real basketball to see a movie about basketball?

Who'd have thought a couple months ago that we'd be looking to Owen Wilson's Drillbit Taylor to save the box office for the Frat Pack this spring?

Analysis of Semi-Pro's Box Office Failure
by Rick Duran

Even though the film opened at #1, this is more shocking than Heartbreak Kid, Fred Claus and Walk Hard.

One theory could be that an R-Rated comedy has to look like an R-Rated comedy (Semi-Pro and Walk Hard looked PG-13. Superbad, Wedding Crashers and Virgin did not.). I've been thinking about this and may have a better analysis:

R-Rated comedy blockbusters: Knocked Up, Superbad, Wedding Crashers, Something About Mary, Virgin, even the American Pie series; Each had a marketing angle that also appealed to women. Semi-Pro, Walk Hard, Tenacious D did not. Exception to this analysis: Heartbreak Kid.

So if a comedy aims to skew mostly male, PG-13 reigns (which is why Adam Sandler rarely ventures into R territory.) Guess this theory won't be answered until we see how R-Rated Step Brothers, Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express perform.

The fact that Semi-Pro is a hard R is surprising. From a marketing standpoint, it looks like a PG-13 basketball comedy; Balls of Glory: The Rise of Jackie Moon. I'm probably missing a key explanation. But I really think these numbers are reflective of the rating. But there's got to be a reason why R-Ratings hurt broad comedies, not romantic/sex comedies (boy, I'm really avoiding the possibility of "didn't look good").

Lastly, if Semi-Pro, Tenacious D, Wild West Comedy and Walk Hard have taught us anything, touring nationally = box office disaster.

Semi-Pro Review ()
by Drew Hunt

Semi-Pro does not fail to inspire some deep, belly-laughs. But, somewhat surprisingly, they don't come from the place you'd most likely expect.

In typical Ferrel fashion, Moon is a clueless self-promoter, more interested in selling his teams appeal with madcap half-time attractions as opposed to any actual coaching. It's a tailor-made role, the kind Ferrel has played for years, but just as it sounds on paper, the character is inherently one-dimensional, a problem Ferrel used to solve with brilliant comedic timing. But here, his performance is lazy, and altogether boring.

The question one is left asking after viewing this film is simply "How long is this going to last?" -- and what a valid question it is. If Blades of Glory showed signs of wear, Semi-Pro is the proverbial straw on the camel's back. If this is indeed the last time we see Will Ferrel as what can now only be referred to as RickyRon MichaelsBobbyMoon, it could only be seen as a welcome change.

New Get Smart Trailer Brings the Funny
by Kevin Crossman

Well, I guess if yesterday was Music Video Wednesday, I guess today is Trailer Thursday. Check out the new trailer for Steve Carell's summer blockbuster, Get Smart. This features a lot of footage previewed last week at Wondercon, according to reports.

Step Brothers Trailer and Official Website Launch
by Kevin Crossman

After Talladega Nights and Adam McKay's statements that Step Brothers would definitely be R-rated, we had kind of high expectations. I guess we need to make those really high expectations now that the hilarious trailer has been released. This is incredibly funny stuff from Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

Meanwhile, the official website has lauched, featuring some games and a companion pieces for the ASSB - American Society of Step Brothers. More fun stuff there, too, as Laura Telles has shown featuring a photo of yours truly along with my Frat Pack heroes.

Owen and Luke Wilson in New Willie Nelson Video
by Kevin Crossman

Owen and Luke Wilson are appearing in the new Willie Nelson video "You Don't Think I'm Funny Anymore", along with Willie's Blonde Ambition costar Jessica Simpson. There's kind of a nice Monkees feel to the gocart footage here (for those of you old enough to have seen the Monkees TV show).

Thanks to Aaron Comer for sending this one in. I guess it's music video Wednesday here on the Tribute.

If this is any indication how Zach and Miri Make a Porno is going to be, I'm starting to really get excited about the latest Kevin Smith film!

Owen, Steve Coogan Return for Night at the Museum 2
by Kevin Crossman

Hank Azaria officially let the cat out of the bag:

Owen [Wilson] is coming back and so is Steve Coogan and Ricky Gervais. And there’s other fun folks too who haven’t officially signed on yet playing historical figures. (MTV Movies)

Azaria gave more detail on his role and confirmed who Amy Adams will be playing. “I am playing a fictional Egyptian pharaoh that comes to life,” Azaria revealed to MTV News. “I’m the villain in the movie and have all sorts of nasty plans for modern society and poor Ben Stiller gets caught in the middle of it.”

We loved Night at the Museum, and especially loved the patented Stiller / Wilson interplay (eve though their shots were put together in post-production). So, we gotta say we're glad to see Owen back.

More intriquing of course, is the wild speculation that must now start regarding those "other fun folks" who haven't "officially signed" to play historical figures. We're reminded of Jack Black recent hilarious but profane portayal of Ben Franklin.

Got any ideas who you'd like to see cast, or what character they might play? Join the discussion.

Oscar Recap
by Beth Millman

Frat Packers and Frat Pack friends were all over the Acadamy Awards Sunday night. As earlier reported, Steve Carrell and Owen Wilson were on stage to hand out Oscars. Carell presented Best Animated Feature with Get Smart costar Anne Hathaway and did an admirable job pretending to introduce a "serious" category. Owen Wilson had a very brief introduction and presented solo, precluding any comedy.

Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill also presented and debated over who was more Halle Berry-like. Katherine Heigl presented, as did Amy Adams, who also performed one of the songs from her nominated movie Enchanted. Juno writer Diablo Cody also won in the writing category for her movie, which co-starred Michael Cera and Jason Bateman.

Unfortunately, no nominations or awards for Mr. Dewey Cox!

Drew Hunt Put Together This Beauty

Be Kind Rewind Review ()
by Drew Hunt

Whimsical director Michel Gondry's latest effort is his most simple to date -- both aesthetically and in terms of story. The French autuer has taken the themes from his 2005 concert doc Dave Chapelle's Block Party and made one of the funniest films so far this year, and while the picture may be thin on plot, the message it delivers is ultimately satisfying as it revolves around a video store that still rents out VHS tapes.

There's plenty here for Frat Pack fans to enjoy, including a quick "cameo" from Matt Walsh of Old School and Starsky and Hutch fame. But the real draw here is Jack Black, who is in true form with what could possibly be his strongest performance to date. His hilarious portrayal as the blue collar shlub Jerry is complete delight, and Gondry has given him enough free reign to provide his character with just the right amount of sass and wit to play off of Mike's sheltered and introverted ethos. Black's bombastic personality is a perfect fit for the film's silly and uplifting tone as he pushes the few strengths of the script to their breaking points. As I said before, fans of Black should make a point not to miss it -- although waiting for the DVD won't lose you any points.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Preview and Cast Interviews
by Kevin Crossman

I had the pleasure of attending the Forgetting Sarah Marshall panel at WonderCon yesterday, and also interviewed many of the principals from the movie.

The panel interview included an extended cut of the trailer with extended and additional scenes. More hilarious stuff than even the red-band trailer that was such a hit. The discussion included lots of focus on star Jason Segel's nude scene along with some hilarious stuff from Jack McBrayer (Talladega Nights)

The audio interviews with the cast, director, and producer offer more insight. We scooped the other reporters by asking director Nicholas Stoller about his involvement as the songwriter behind the "Blades of Glory" theme song.

We also asked Shauna Robertson about the "official" name for the Judd Apatow group. Kristen Bell dished about Hawaii and Fanboys reshoots, while Russell Brand discussed his influences.

The Frat Pack on the Cover of Sight & Sound
by Kevin Crossman

Be sure to check out the March 2008 issue of Sight & Sound, featuring a cover story on the Frat Pack.

Of course, this being Sight & Sound, the cover story goes on and on for about a thousand words before we really start to talk about the Pack. And when you have sentences like "Stiller intended The Cable Guy to break this cycle of intertextuality" I guess you know this is a kind of different treament than USA Today's coverage.

I'm not saying the article is bad, but it's less about the Frat Pack than some of the directors and creative talent than the actors themselves. Vince Vaughn didn't make the cover and is barely mentioned. Meanwhile, there are extensive passages devoted to David O. Russell and David Fincher.

"Old School enabled Ferrell and co-writer/director Adam McKay - supported by David O. Russell - to make Anchorman, the film that also announced Judd Apatow's return to feature production, eight years after The Cable Guy. Based on extensive pre-production cast rehearsals and improvisation, and drawing on a gifted pool of comic performers, Anchorman established the Apatow modus operandi, what Russell calls "a balance between performance art and narrative film". Only Zoolander rivals it for this decade's most quoted movie."

Lindsay Lohan Tapped for Jack Black's Ye Olde Times
by Kevin Crossman

While I wouldn't characterize this as the best news I've heard all week, it certainly isn't the argmegeddon portrayed by some.

E! News is reporting that Lindsay Lohan has signed to star opposite Jack Black in the RenFaire comedy Ye Olde Times. The film was previously set to shoot last September but is now slated for an April film date.

A source at Patriot Pictures, which is producing the yukfest, told E! News that the film follows two rival Renaissance Faire troupes as they make their way through the competitive circuit. It's unclear whether Lohan will be one of Black's repertory players or a member of a competing Ren Faire faction.

Others previously rumored to appear in Times include Will Arnett, John C. Reilly, Tim Robbins, and Missi Pyle.

Lohan, as no doubt most of you know, has had numerous troubles of late, including a state in rehab and a string of box office failures. Lohan's I Know Who Killed Me swept the Razzies today, for example. So, Lohan is trying to rehabilitate her career and is likely working cheap and will provide a ton of free publicity to a film that probably needs it. Let's just hope it is good pub, eh?

Official Step Brothers One-Sheet
by Kevin Crossman

Lots of folks sent this one into our news desk. Kudos to the guys at Cinematical for breaking this one. Here's the official poster for Step Brothers, from "the guys who brought you Talladega Nights" (that would be writer/director Adam McKay, producer Judd Apatow, and a couple writer/stars named Ferrell and Reilly).

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston Ready to Film Marley and Me
by Kevin Crossman

Lots of fans are writing in with this story that hit the press-outlets today but is essentially old news around here. Wilson to begin work on `Marley & Me' is the headline, but we've known for a while that Owen was set to film Marley with Jennifer Aniston in March.

Filming will take place in Miami, and if you're a local there's a great opportunity:

Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson will be in town filming Marley and Me, beginning March 10 and continuing for 9 weeks. The movie needs extras of both sexes, all ages and ethnicities. If you want to apply, send a recent photo, contact numbers, height, and, oddly, your make, model, year and color of your car, if applicable to Lori Wyman Casting, 16499 NE 19th Ave., #203, North Miami Beach, FL 33162. Now we know that Wilson likes to tap into local talent, which is good news for the ladies, but as for Aniston, we're not sure she likes to mingle with the help. Time will tell. (MiamiHerald.com)

Marley was recently set for a Christmas Day release, which bodes well for this high-profile project directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada). Jennifer Aniston has been off-screen since The Break-Up but has completed filming on several projects prior to the start of Marley.

In other news, frequent Frat Pack musical composer Theodore Shapiro (Old School, Starsky & Hutch, Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro) has been added to the Marley and Me team as well.

Thanks to Laura and Beth for research assistance with this story.

Unusual and Revealing Look Into Will Ferrell's Mind
by Kevin Crossman

You all know we love Will Ferrell. But the man hardly wears his heart on his sleeve. His interviews are notorious for avoid questions by going "shticky" with his answers. Even his DVD commentaries rarely provide insight into his approach to movie-making, instead focusing on bringing in costars or even friends to just joke around during the movie commentary.

So, it comes as a surprise to see this quote from Will. It's from an article from The Independent, and is Will's reaction to asking if he has "dark" places:

Ferrell has experienced very few downs: "I guess I haven't. So far. Although, I remember when Talladega Nights came out, I think it was Entertainment Weekly that wrote: 'He's back!' And I thought, 'What? Did I go somewhere?' And they whipped through the past year [2005] in which my films in one year were Kicking & Screaming, Bewitched, The Wendell Baker Story, The Producers and Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda. And they cited that as a year that was rocky.

"But meanwhile Melinda and Melinda, that was considered – at least in a lot of stuff I read – that I held my own in a Woody Allen movie; Kicking & Screaming turned out to actually be a really big hit with families; Bewitched didn't perform I think in the way they thought it would, and it was the poster child for what's wrong with Hollywood – and yet it made domestically $125m, which still seems OK... and then The Producers, which only made about $40m; but they categorised it as my movie, which I was only in maybe six scenes, for which I was nominated for a Golden Globe, so that was my bad year... So, yeah, I survived."

Let's parse the answer and see if Will's answer seems fair and accurate:

So, although it looks like Will doesn't quite have all the facts correct, overall I'd say the spirit of Will's rebuttal is fairly spot-on. Speaking personally, I have great fondness for Kicking & Screaming and loved all of Will's parts of Bewitched (especially his chemistry with Jason Schwartzman and Steve Carell).

So, let's salute Will Ferrell for opening up a bit. We like this stuff, Will. Keep it up.

Jack Black Loves the Frat Pack!
by Karen Pok

Jack Black is doing promotion for Be Kind Rewind, opening on February 22nd. There's a revealing interview in the LA Times where Jack talks about the Frat Pack.

When something piques Black's interest, though, his enthusiasm is boundless. Mention music, movies or, for example, his membership of the Frat Pack - the loose conglomeration of comic actors that also includes Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell - and his face contorts into a loopy grin.

“I love it! All of them I think would like to destroy that thing, but I love it. I think those guys are great and I'm in there? Yeah! I'm the only card-carrying member that actually shows up for Frat Pack meetings!” he sniggers.

Black will appear this summer in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder. He is currently filming The Year One with Judd Apatow and friends. Some spy photos of The Year One have recently surfaced.

Trouble in Paradise for Tropic Thunder?
by Kevin Crossman

We've tried to stay optomistic about Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, costarring Jack Black and host of other A-listers. But the fact that we've seen nary a shred of footage, no poster, and no teaser had us a little worried. We'd also heard reports of filming going past expected deadlines and some stars having to come back to the studio for additional shooting.

Today, ComingSoon is reporting that Variety says that Dreamworks is pushing Tropic Thunder back from July 11 to August 15. Since the really big blockbusters rarely open in August, that might be seen as a kiss of death. The sting is mitigated somewhat by the recent performances of August-opening action-pictures like The Bourne Ultimatum and another action-comedy Rush Hour 3 ($140 million domestic, $255 million worldwide). And Superbad didn't do too shabby last August either.

So, maybe this is a whole lot about nothing much. Come on, Dreamworks. Can you shed some light?

Hey, did you hear? Will Ferrell has a movie coming out! Perhaps you've heard something about it?

Yes, in an effort to make raise awareness amongst every man, woman, and child from nine to ninety, the Will Ferrell / Semi-Pro train is running full-steam ahead.

We previously told you about the FunnyorDie Comedy Tour. The college laugh-fest is going strong, and we've heard that Will Arnett has been added to the tour as an MC. Meanwhile, Ferrell has been appearing as Ron Burgundy and other characters.

And today we saw the first photos from the upcoming Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. And who did we spy with our little eye? Yes, that's Will appearing as Jackie Moon alongside supermodel Heidi Klum in a series of shots inspired by Semi-Pro's 1970's vibe.

Hank Azaria Tapped for Ben and Jack's New Movies
by Kevin Crossman

As news goes it doesn't get much bigger than this. Add another Circle of Trust member to two anticipated projects. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Hank Azaria (Dodgeball, Along Came Polly) has joined the ensembles of Ben Stiller and Jack Black's new movies.

The actor has joined the cast of Fox's "Night at the Museum 2: Escape From the Smithsonian," playing an all-powerful Egyptian pharaoh named Kah Mun Rah.

Azaria also will play Abraham in Judd Apatow's "Year One" for Columbia.

This is fabulous news, especially for Year One which is a much harder sell than Ben's family-friendly sequel. Year One is a biblical comedy starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, and is directed and co-written by Harold Ramis. Apatow is a producer alongside Owen Wilson who will exec. produce.

No Laughs at Box Office for Vince Vaughn
by Kevin Crossman

Not expected to be a blockbuster while opening on only 700 screens, the box office results from this weekend were anemic for Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show. The documentary / concert film made only $500,000 for the entire weekend, far less than the $3 million expected by many box office experts.

I'm of mixed feelings about this. While I loved WWCS and do recommend it, I can't feel entirely bad about the situation, especially coming on the heels of the underperforming Fred Claus. While Vince's holiday film made about $70 million, that was chump change compared to another holiday film targeting families, Alvin and the Chipmonks. That film has made over $200 million.

So why is bad box office a good thing? Well, for us Frat Pack fans we really like our Frat Pack actors and support all of their projects. But what we really love is when those guys work together.

One could easily imagine a scenario where Owen Wilson's Drillbit Taylor opens in March to The Heartbreak Kid rather than Dupree style numbers ($40 million vs. $80 million). While I'm excited about Drillbit it does not appear to be supported very well by a good marketing campaign (compare to Semi-Pro for example).

So, let's say it's mid-April and Drillbit doesn't soar at the box office. Ya think there might be a bit more urgency for that Wedding Crashers sequel that Vince reacted to favorably during interviews for Fred Claus? We think so. And we surely wouldn't mind.

Happy Birthday Jennifer Aniston
by Kevin Crossman

We admit we've got a soft spot for Jenn, who more than held up her end of the bargain opposite Ben Stiller (Along Came Polly) and Vince Vaughn (The Break Up).

And you know we're really looking forward to her starring role opposite Owen Wilson (Marley and Me), scheduled to begin shooting next month. Aniston turns 39 today.

Seth Rogen Part of Vanity Fair Salute

The March issue of Vanity Fair is a Hitchcock portfolio with Seth Rogen re-creating a scene as Cary Grant in North By Northwest. This is part of their annual Hollywood Issue (remember Ben, Owen, and Jack on the cover last year?).

Vince Vaughn Holds Court in SoHo
by Sharon Gruber

My experience at the Wild West Comedy Show Advanced Screening on Feb. 7th at the Apple store in SoHo, was in one word, phenomenal.

At first I arrived with my friend at 5:30 pm, 3 hours before it started. I got on the line and was one of the first people there. By the time it hit 6 pm the line was growing until finally reaching around the corner and down the block. Manhattan blocks are long, so you could only imagine the amount of people coming to see the film and Vince. I was one of the first inside when they called us in and we went upstairs to a little open room with a screen and seats which filled maybe about 70 people. It was an intimate setting which was great for us to be so close to the action and be in the thick of it all. I sat in the second row, right in the middle, the first row was reserved for photographers and Apple employees. I had a clear open view towards the seat where Jeffery Lyons (the reporter) and Vince Vaughn were going to sit for the interview, no one was in front of me.

The film started and lasted about an 1hr and 30 min. I, as well as the rest of the audience enjoyed this film. The moments on the bus, on stage and everything in between were full of realistic views that everyone can relate to as well as side splitting comedy. I rate this film 4 beer mugs, a must see!

After the film Vince Vaughn came out and answered questions given by Jeffery Lyons. After that he answered questions from the audience.

I was the first to raise my hand and the first person to ask a question. I asked Vince a question about what was the most emotionally touching part of the tour. He then went on to talk about the Hurricane Katrina victims and everything that he saw while he was visiting the people who had lost their homes.

The other question I asked was if they'd be coming to NY to do the show. As I asked this question Jeffrey Lyons asked if I was a plant and if someone planted me here because he heard rumors of the guys possibly doing another show and he asked how I knew about this. I didn't get an answer because the microphone was then taken away and on to new topics.

Others in the audience asked Vince questions, as one audience member asked about him being apart of the Frat Pack which many of the same kind of comedy and characters. Vince said that there was no organization, nothing set up like Will Ferrell doesn't say to everyone, "Hey, I need you to do this for me", and they all gather like the godfather. He did say that Ben Stiller was the one who holds a lot of things together and the one who is the main source of all the guys in these films.

I had a great time at the screening, and for the first time seeing Vince up close was a very cool experience. I got a free Wild West Comedy Show hat, and a great experience. I'm glad that I went.

ReelTalk TV Interview with Vince Vaughn

Another great piece from ReelTalk TV, as Jeffrey Lyons interviews Vince Vaughn.

This is good stuff and at twelve minutes allows for a variety of topics including the Wild West Comedy Show, Four Christmases, Into the Wild, Wedding Crashers, Becoming a Better Actor, and Jon Favreau's weight loss. Also, watch how deftly Vince avoids the topic of Fred Claus' box office...

Jack Black Hosting Kids Choice Award Again
by Amy Gilbert

Nickelodeon's 21st Annual Kids' Choice Awards Taps Jack Black to Host, as Hollywood Primes to Meet the Slime, Saturday, March 29. Black previously hosted the awards in 2006 and presented Ben Stiller with a lifetime achievement award in 2007.

"We couldn't be happier that Jack is back to host Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice, and we're looking forward to seeing what he'll do for an encore on the show," said Marjorie Cohn, Executive Vice President, Development and Original Programming, Nickelodeon and an Executive Producer of the telecast. "Kids adore Jack, and his energy and unpredictability are a perfect fit for KCA. Last year's 20th milestone show broke records, but with Jack's energy and unpredictability we're expecting more surprises and more slime than ever before."

Jazzed about the return hosting gig, Black said, "I had a ball hosting The Kids Choice Awards, and I'm gearing up big-time to 'take charge' of the chaos and mess again this year. After all, I'm a second-time dad-to-be. I have a lot of secret plans, and I hope to give as good as I get when it comes to good, clean, slimy-green fun."

Arrested Development Film in the Works
by Adam Stevenson

The Arrested Development film is finally..........in development. That's right, Jason Bateman spilled the news to E! Online and claims everyone from the cast seems to be very much on board. Maybe we'll see more illusions from Tony Wonder? This is one of the best pieces of Frat Pack related news I've heard in a while.

"I can confirm that a round of sniffing has started," Bateman said. "Any talk is targeting a poststrike situation, of course. I think, as always, that it's a question of whether the people with the money are willing to give our leader, Mitch Hurwitz, what he deserves for his participation. And I can speak for the cast when I say our fingers are crossed."

The show about a dysfunctional family ran on Fox from 2003-2006 and won six Emmy awards. The series starred a host of actors familiar to Frat Pack fans, including Jason Bateman who was the series lead. Also on hand as series regulars were Will Arnett, Michael Cera (playing Bateman's son), and David Cross.

The show featured a series of familar faces in recurring or guest starring spots, including the aforementioned Tony Wonder played by Ben Stiller, along with characters portrayed by Amy Poehler, Jane Lynch, Rob Corddry, Christine Taylor, Ian Roberts, Andy Dick, Alan Tudyk, Andy Richter, and Gary Cole.

Incredible Article About Rudd and Pfeiffer's Lost Movie
by Kevin Crossman

We've been pimping the DVD release of the Michelle Pfeiffer / Paul Rudd romcom I Could Never Be Your Woman for a while now, and we're going to keep doing it.

Today's link is an amazing article from Entertainment Weekly that describes exactly why this quite funny and very releasable movie never had a cinematic run. Instead, the movie gets dumped right to DVD to a movie-buying public that must expect this movie is even worse than the similar movie that Rudd actually has in theatres right now (that one with Eva Longoria, whatever the heck it is called).

I'll say it a million times if I have to. Every fan of Paul Rudd needs to see Woman. It's an incredible performance that blows away his performances in Knocked Up or The 40 Year-Old Virgin. And there are enjoyable turns by other actors including Pfeiffer, Jon Lovitz, Fred Willard, and (recently Oscar nominated) Saoirse Ronan.

I Could Never Be Your Woman is available on DVD on February 12th.

Wild West Comedy Show is Hilarious but Lacks Insight ****
by Kevin Crossman

Filmed in the fall of 2005, Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - Hollywood to the Heartland is finally hitting theatres and it's a great time at the movies.

The concept is fairly simple: follow Vince Vaughn, his Hollywood friends, and four up-and-coming comedians as they travel by bus from L.A. to Chicago.

Along the way, we learn about the complicated backgrounds of the comedians, Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, Bret Ernst, Sebastian Maniscalco, who make us laugh but also touch our hearts.

The footage of Vaughn's variety show is entertaining and hilarious, but unfortunately we don't get to learn much about Vince, the man.

Amy Adams to Join Ben Stiller on Museum 2?
by Rick Duran

Finally, something that doesn't make me completely hate the idea of a Night at the Museum sequel: Amy Adams!

According to Variety, Amy Adams (Talladega Nights) is in negotiations to star opposite Ben Stiller in 20th Century Fox's "Night at the Museum 2." The movie kicks off when the artifacts from the Museum of Natural History are boxed up and sent to the archives at the Smithsonian in Washington. Adams will play an undetermined historical figure who has a crush on security guard Larry (Stiller).

Earlier reports tapped Amelia Earhart as a new character for the sequel, so one presumes Adams would would be set to play the lost aviator.

Shawn Levy returns to helm the sequel, which has a U.S. release date set for May 22, 2009. Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon wrote the screenplay, Scott Frank the most recent draft.

In addition to her Earmuff winning role in the Will Ferrell NASCAR comedy, Adams also cameoed in the "Master Exploder" scene in Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.

Hilarious Red-Band Trailer for Forgetting Sarah Marshall
by Kevin Crossman

If you felt, hmm... a tad "underwhelmed" by the original trailer for the latest project from Judd Apatow's crew, head right on over and check out the unrated red-band trailer for Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

This thing is a major improvement and is a whole-lot funnier. There are some memorable soon-to-be classic lines and catch-phrases from this highly anticipated spring release. FSM is directed by Nick Stoller and produced by Apatow and Shauna Robertson (Knocked Up, Superbad, et. al.). The trailer even gives us more "exposure" to the character played by Jack McBrayer (Talladega Nights).

Stars Jason Segel and Kristen Bell both have some memorable moments in this new trailer, though I've got to be honest and say I'm not fan of Apatow's "male nudity" trend. I mean, there are two sex scenes in Knocked Up and the only nudity is Seth Rogen's? And of course we're still haunted by those scenes from Walk Hard. Now, we have Jason Segal bending over in our faces while Bell keeps a sarong on even while getting busy. We love you Judd, but how 'bout you switch this trend up next time, okay?

Still, we're once again looking at Forgetting Sarah Marshall as April's number one highly anticipated film. Good show!

More Land of the Lost Casting News
by Kevin Crossman

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Anna Friel will play the female lead opposite Will Ferrell in Land of the Lost. Directed by Brad Silberling, Lost is an adaptation of the 1970's Saturday morning show. Ferrell plays Rick Marshall, a disgraced paleontologist.

Friel is a blank slate to me, though I've heard that she was good in Pushing Daises but bland in some British soaps.

Strange Wilderness Does Not Impress
by Drew Hunt

I really took a bullet for the Tribute today. Here's my review of Strange Wilderness starring Steve Zahn, Justin Long, and Jonah Hill.

Happy Madison's newest non-Sandler starring venture, Strange Wilderness, came and went this weekend without so much as a blip on the proverbial box office radar. This is probably because there was no press screening prior to its release (which, for all intents and purposes, is never a good sign), but for the sake of my ongoing belief in humanity, I'll hope it was because people were smart enough to see that this flick is a stinker, which it most certainly is.

Directed by former Saturday Night Live writer Fred Wolf, the film stars Steve Zahn as Peter Gaulke (who happens to share the name of Wolf's writing partner), a slacker disguised as a nature show host who is in desperate need of some ratings, having succesfully driven his father's beloved show into the ground after taking the ropes upon his death. After obtaining a map of Bigfoot's jungle lair, he and his partner, one Fred Wolf (Sandler regular Allen Covert) assemble a rag tag crew for the biggest expedition of their lives.

Unfortunately for them, they failed to pack anything resembling a joke.

Will Ferrell "Steals" Award from Cancer Victim
by Karen Pok

Actor/comedian Will Ferrell made a surprise appearance Saturday night in Seattle at a benefit for the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Cancer for College.

14 students were awarded college scholarships during the evening among them, Will Farrell, a junior at Central Washington University, who survived Lymphoma last year. But when 20- year- old Mr. Farrell tried to accept his award the Hollywood actor/comedian with the same name approached the podium too, saying, “I’m not in college and I’ve never had cancer, but I’m going to keep the money.”

Will Ferrell and Will Farrell

The hilarious moment happened at the second annual Taste to Educate, a wine tasting benefit that drew a crowd of more than 200 to the Museum of History and Industry, Saturday night January 26th, 2008. Actor/comedian, Will Ferrell then came clean, telling the crowd he wanted to meet the young man who shared his name and the rest of the young people whom, he said, he admires greatly.

Positive Buzz from Early Cut of Steve Carell's Action-Comedy, Get Smart
by Kevin Crossman

Quint over at AICN has an extensive review of an early cut of Get Smart. And, believe it not, he's actually pretty impressed.

"I know this won’t paint the nicest picture to a lot of you, but speaking as a fan of the balance between comedy and action in the first CHARLIE’S ANGELS movie I’d compare the footage I saw favorably to that first movie. The character casting was great, the laughs were really funny and the action was real big budget action stuff."

As someone who liked both Charlie's Angels movies, this is great news. Quint also covers Steve Carell's performance, along with Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, and even David Koechner ("People love watching assholes get hurt").

David Koechner's The Comebacks on DVD Tomorrow
by Kevin Crossman

While it's hard not to judge a book by it's cover, The Comebacks was a better-than-expected spoof of sports movies, starring Anchorman's "Champ" Kind himself, David Koechner.

Also on board are Melora Hardin, Brooke Nevin, Matthew Lawrence. Andy Dick appears as a referee in a cameo role. We caught the movie during it's theatrical run and actually found it funnier than The Heartbreak Kid, though our reviewer Rick Duran did not agree.

The DVD is coming on Tuesday, though I expect the Unrated ("R rated") version is likely superior and worth your attention. Unrated DVD bonus materials include:

Ten Reasons to Love The Ten
by Beth Millman

I know that the Tribute posted some info on The Ten a couple of weeks back when it was released. But I wrote another review for the movie, titled Ten Reasons to Watch The Ten, that I thought might be good for the site. Just thought it would be another interesting way to let people know about this awesome movie.

  1. 1. The State
Surprisingly, many people still do not know about this awesome show. If you even recognize names like Kevin Allison and David Wain you are way ahead on this one, and like Reno 911, you will be happy to see almost every State member popping up throughout the movie.
  2. 2. Paul Rudd
Any Frat Pack, Apt Pack, or State fan undoubtedly already knows Paul Rudd, but as always, you can look forward to another great performance. His character here has the great responsibility of narrating us on all ten commandments, while showing his Knocked Up like character’s own flaws in following these particular guidelines.
  3. 3. Friends of The State
As mentioned earlier almost all members of the group appear, and those paying extra attention will also see cast members of Wet Hot American Summer like A.D. Miles and the female neighbors on Stella, like Rashida Jones (also of The Office).
  4. 4. Friends of The Frat Pack
Like many other projects, there are overlaps of familiar faces in this movie. Although none of the core Frat Packers appear, there are many friends in big and small appearances such as Winona Ryder, Paul Rudd, and Janeane Garafolo. State/Reno 911 members Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garrant wrote Night at the Museum, and member Joe LoTruglio also appeared in Superbad.
  5. 5. Interweaving Characters
Like episodes of The State and Upright Citizens Brigade, characters pop up again and again, connecting the stories. Goofy doctor Ken Marino and mixed up girlfriend Winona Ryder in particular can be seen more than once.
  6. 6. Cat Scan Machines
Some of the best parts of this movie are just plain silly. Although this equipment exaggerates and describes a particular commandment, it is hilarious to see two houses full of them...
  7. 7. Puppet Sex
  8. 8. Prison Sex
  9. 9. Cartoon Drug Dealers
  10. 10. Jesus Christ’s Girlfriend

(7-10 you’ll just have to watch and see what they have to do with the Ten Commandments!)

Will Ferrell Returns to Irish Roots
by Karen Pok

Will Ferrell donned Irish rugby jersey, shorts, socks and beanie to accept the James Joyce Award from the University College Dublin on Wednesday. He addressed more than 1000 students and told of how he was embracing his newfound Irishness: 'I love the taste of Guinness on the back of your throat, when it repeats on you the next morning,' he said. 'I love sitting in a cosy pub talking with a local, whose accent is so thick it s ounds like he's gargling phlegm.'

Will, in town with his father Lee and brother Patrick to trace their family history in County Longford, echoed Ron Burgundy’s ‘love’ of literature. 'As I perused my leatherbound volumes of 'Ulysses,' 'Finnegans Wake,' 'Dubliners,' 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,' standing in my mahogany library, a lot of feelings ran across my mind. Like: 'Damn, I should have read these books'.'

He didn’t need to read them after all, the James Joyce honor was awarded to him for his contribution to comedy and entertainment. Will joins the likes of previous winners including UN weapons inspector Hans Blix ('Hans and I hang out all the time') and activist Jesse Jackson.

Let’s hope Will doesn’t take his love for Ireland too far: 'I'm so committed to my Irish roots that I intend to continue wearing this outfit upon my return to the United States. I will also continue to drive on the left-hand side of the road. Will it be dangerous? Yes. Is it illegal? Highly. But that's just how committed I am.'

But we’re sure Steve Carell would rather be holidaying in Ireland than be doing jury-duty for $15 an hour.

No Laughing for Cooper and Bibb in Midnight Meat Train
by Kevin Crossman

We don't cover horror around here very often. Unless you count Luke Wilson's films Vacancy (not really that scary) or Blonde Ambition (very, very scary...).

But here's a new horror project starring a couple familiar faces from Frat Pack past. Midnight Meat Train stars Bradley Cooper (Wedding Crashers) as Leon, an obsessive photographer in pursuit of dark subject matter that leads him into the path of a serial killer. The subway murderer stalks late-night commuters -- ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways imaginable.

With Cooper's concerned girlfriend Maya (Leslie Bibb, Talladega Nights) fearing for his life, Leon’s relentless fascination with the killer lures him further and further into the bowels of the subways and ultimately into an abyss of pure evil – inadvertently pulling Maya right along with him.

Midnight Meat Train is scheduled for release on May 16th.

I Could Never See Your Woman... Until February 12th
by Kevin Crossman

Thanks to our tipster Anthony Jones for this one. Paul Rudd's oft-delayed generational romance I Could Never Be Your Woman is coming to DVD on February 12th. The film was initially to be released in 2006 and costars Michelle Pfeiffer as a Hollywood screenwriter who romances a younger man (Rudd) who is an actor on a teen comedy.

We've seen a bootleg version and the movie is quite watchable. However, the film feels very, very dated (think 2005 pop culture references), which probably doomed the release of the film helmed by Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High). And while this isn't the greatest film for either of the leads, it's definitely worth a look.

By the way, what's the deal with the awful Photoshoping on DVDs latey? I know Rudd is older than the character he plays, but com' on...

Oscars Don't Love Cox... or Apatow
by Kevin Crossman

Disappointingly, there was no love at the Oscars for Frat Pack projects this year. Judd Apatow was considered in the running for a Best Original Screenplay nod for Knocked Up and songs from Walk Hard were considered possible nominees as well. Alas, both were shut out.

Did Enchanted really need three Best Original Song nominations? Couldn't they have thrown Cox a bone? At least we have the Earmuffs...

Oh the Humanity
by Kevin Crossman

Luke Wilson had a pretty good weekend. His Pro-Am team of George Lopez and Samuel L. Jackson finished first at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at Palm Springs. Our researcher Laura Telles even found some good video of Luke answering questions on camera. Pay attention to the "golf whispers" from Mr. Wilson.

In the meantime, Luke jetted to Sundance where his drama Henry Poole Was Here is getting some pretty good buzz. In familiar turn for those who watched the distribution drama of recent Luke Wilson films, Henry Poole is without a distributor. However, the positive buzz for the film costarring Luke's golfing buddy Geoge Lopez seems to be drawing interest.

Update: The LA Times is reporting that Henry Poole's distrib rights were sold to Overture Films for $4.5 million.

And fans of Luke will likely be interested in today's DVD release of the oft-maligned Blonde Ambition costarring Jessica Simpson and Andy Dick. And, believe it or not, this was the "artwork" that Sony is pushing out on their emails lists in order to entice us to purchase the DVD. What a shitty Photoshop job that monstrocity is!

That said, we do think Blonde Ambition is worth a look, if for no other reason than a hilarious performance by Andy Dick.

Woody Collaborating with the "Bickerson Brothers"?
by Kevin Crossman

According to published reports, Woody Harrelson has been collaborating with his new "brofriend" Owen Wilson on a script. There's also talk that Owen's brother Luke will be involved, if the sibling rivalry can be worked out.

Woody was quoted saying "We have written about three sentences. It's just so much fun hanging out with Owen, it's hard to get down to business. I like to bring in the other Bickerson brother too. That's what I call the Wilson brothers. I consider myself one of them too. We bicker when we play bocce or croquet. You can't believe how serious a wonderful lawn game can become when you play it with the Wilson brothers."

Harrelson is costarring in Will Ferrell's next sports comedy, Semi-Pro, coming to theatres next month.

Juno Soundtrack a Consistent Treat... for Some
by Kevin Crossman

Juno has been a treat for cinephiles but now it's gaining a reputation for audiophiles as well. The soundtrack has been doing gangbuster business as well, recently rocketing into the Top 5 albums chart. Well, the kind folks over at Rhino Records provided a review copy so we thought we'd put together a little review.

For those who've seen the movie, you already know what kind of music you're gonna be listening to on the album. And while the movie's music does span genres the soundtrack is pretty tightly focused on acoustic guitar songs sung by quirky singers.

It's nice to see some consistency in a soundtrack album, though it's kind of a love-it-or-hate-it affair.

You see, this album might as well be called "Kimya Dawson Presents," since she appears solo or with her groups The Moldy Peaches and Antsy Pants on eight of the nineteen tracks. Plus, the Peaches' song "Anyone Else But You" is also present in form of the Micheal Cera / Ellen Page duet from the film's closing scene. However, Dawson isn't everyone's cup of tea; she doesn't have a great voice and the production values aren't great for her songs. But that's probably the point for some fans, and there's certainly a catchy sense to most of these tracks.

Also present are similar sounding songs from The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and others. Belle & Sebastian have two tracks on the disc, "Piazza, New York Catcher" and "Expectations," that were probably the two best tracks - at least to my ears and sensibility. The film's opening credits song, "All I Want is You" by Barry Louis Polisar is catchy and memorable as well.

The liner notes for the album feature a nice writeup by Juno director Jason Reitman who tells the story of how the music was chosen. Juno star Ellen Page actually turned Reitman on to Dawson's music and thus the theme of the soundtrack was "born" (that's a pregnancy reference for those of you who aren't paying close attention...).

So, preview the album over at iTunes and check it out for yourself. If you like Kimya Dawson's songs you'll love the Juno Soundtrack. If you don't love Dawson's stuff? Well, you still might want to pick up a few key tracks.

Luke Wilson Golfing
by Kevin Crossman

Check out the 'stache on our buddy Luke Wilson, appearing this week at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Springs. Wilson was paired with George Lopez, Samuel L. Jackson, and defending champ Charley Hoffman (no, I haven't heard of Hoffman either...).

Meanwhile, it appears Luke is getting into shape. FitSugar has spy pics and an apparent workout regimine for the youngest Fratter. And we say it's about time. Luke's been kind of, well, bloated the last couple years and that's been as much of a distraction in his recent comedies as his annoying costars Jessica Simpson and Uma Thurman. We want the thin and hip Luke back!

Can't We All Just Get Along
by Kevin Crossman

We're surprised we don't see more articles like The Brat Pack Versus The Frat Pack: Who's Served Cinema Better? After all, this is an easy comparison to make and the "conflict" is an easy story to sell. That said, this article did have a few good insights. I wonder who they were referring to below?

Today, on the other hand, we hold claim to the Frat Pack - a group of the highest flying comedy actors of the 1990s and 2000s who've starred in some of the period's top grossing movies. So dubbed by the USA Today, 'Frat Pack' is also a reference to the movie Old School which starred several of the crew.

Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Carell are commonly accepted as the constituents of the fraternity and have a wild, rough-and-ready reputation. The Frat Pack has a cult like following and commands a fair bit of power in Hollywood, but can these funny men really compete with the starry-eyed Brat Pack of the 80s?

Sarah Marshall Moved to April; Competes with Baby Mama?
by Kevin Crossman

Universal has moved Forgetting Sarah Marshall up to April 18th, previously set for an early summer release. This currently puts in the same week as The Rocker with Rainn Wilson, and just a week before Universal's Baby Mama with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

It would seem unlikely that the same studio would open similar movies in consecutive weeks. Our Senior Editor Rick Duran chimed in on our message boards with "No way does Baby Mama stay in that spot though. I doubt Universal would let its two comedies cancel each other out." As a coincidence, the Baby Mama trailer dropped today and looks pretty funny with great lines from Poehler, Fey, and Romany Malco.

Though the films are both comedies starring familar faces to Frat Pack fans, the films probably appeal to different demographics. Our assumtion is that Baby Mama is PG-13 and skewing female (as indicated in our Baby Mama Spy Screening Report).

Meanwhile, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is rated R, and likely marketed to males who want to see Knocked Up alumni Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, and Jonah Hill.

And... let's just say that FSM's Kristen Bell is likely appeal more to young males than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

So, perhaps both movies will stick to their late April dates. Either way, both movies look great.

Walk Hard Coming to Blu-ray and DVD on March 25
by Kevin Crossman

High-Def Digest is reporting on the specs for the Blu-ray edition of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, arriving with the DVD on March 25.

Early specs indicate a two-disc set, with the first disc containing an unrated cut of the film, boasting 30 minutes of newly-inserted footage.

Multiple extras spread over both discs will include an audio commentary with writer/producer Judd Apatow, star John C. Reilly and director Jake Kasdan, multiple making-of featurettes, deleted & extended scenes, unexpurgated versions of musical performances seen in the film, and the "Line-O-Rama" montage.

Will Ferrell Heading to Broadway as McBride Gets Lost
by Kevin Crossman

The New York Post is reporting that Will Ferrell has been shopping for theatre locations in New York for a one-man show he is currently planning. Similar to shows by Martin Short and Billy Crystal, Ferrell is said to be writing now and plans to hit Broadway next fall. Ferrell has a connection to Broadway, having been tapped for the The Producers film, based on the musical.

According to the Post:

The Ferrell Project will be autobiographical and include anecdotes about the comedian's work on "Saturday Night Live."

Ferrell also will do some of his fabled impersonations - of George W. Bush, Robert Goulet, Neil Diamond, Jesse Ventura and "Inside the Actors Studio" host James Lipton.

Meanwhile, IGN is reporting that Danny McBride is joining Ferrell in Land of the Lost. McBride, whose credits include The Hearthbreak Kid, Hot Rod and the upcoming Drillbit Taylor, Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder, said he will play the role of "Will" in the Brad Silberling-directed adventure-comedy.

Scheduled for a July 17, 2009 release, the film is based on the 1974-77 television series of the same name. It revolves around a disgraced paleontologist, his assistant and a macho tour guide who find themselves in a strange world inhabited by dinosaurs, monkey people and reptilian Sleestaks.

This isn't the first time Ferrell and McBride have teamed up. Will is distributing McBride's Foot Fist Way (said to be freakin' hilarious) and producing his HBO show East Bound & Dawn.

Jack Black was previously rumored for Land of the Lost and it's possible McBride is taking over that role.

Paul Rudd and The Ten on DVD Today
by Kevin Crossman

Just another reminder that the David Wain vingette comedy The Ten is available on DVD starting today. Based on the Ten Commandments, Rudd introduced a series of scenes based on each commandment (loosely based, mind you...).

Back in August we wrote "Paul Rudd provides a welcome host for the entire set of stories." Other familiar faces are Winona Ryder (with a memorable love scene), Rob Corddry, Andy Sudekis, and host of familar faces from previous productions from director David Wain. Cowriter Ken Marino is particularly good, especially when he unleases the year's most twisted catch-phrase, "That's why they call it rape."

The DVD includes some nice extras, including:

In our review we said "The Ten is worth seeing for Frat Pack fans who want to see another style of comedy featuring some familiar faces." So, now's your chance, kids! What are you waiting for?

Steve Carell Action Hero?
by Kevin Crossman

The L.A. Times has a real nice preview article about Steve Carell's next summer tentpole, Get Smart. We know it's a remake of the classic 1960's TV comedy, and Steve is perfectly cast as Maxwell Smart. But what we didn't know what that this movie is full of action.

Steve Carell alongside Get Smart Costar Anne Hathaway

"I've always envisioned myself as a major action star," deadpans 45-year-old Carell. "You know, frankly, not in a million years did I ever think I'd be the lead in anything, let alone be in an action movie beating up bad guys. It's so much fun. And it's so ridiculous that this is where I found myself at my advanced age."

Read: Steve Carell goes where the action is in 'Get Smart'

Meanwhile, Carell's last film Dan in Real Life is coming to DVD on March 11th. There are a modest set of extras that include:

Weeping on the Inside
by Rick Duran

No shock that Steve Carell and the Walk Hard team that included Judd Apatow and double nominee John C. Reilly lost in their categories at the Golden Globes tonight.

What is a shock was the complete shutout for the heavily-favored Juno.

Meanwhile, you have until Friday, January 18 to submit your nominations in for the Frat Pack Earmuff Awards.

Michel Gondry's "Kind" Talk
by Drew Hunt

Michel Gondry appeared at the North Michigan Avenue Apple Store for a Q&A about Be Kind Rewind. I was lucky enough to get to ask him a question, and of course I asked him about Jack. I asked whether or not he wrote the character with JB in mind for the role, or if he was cast and then brought in some of his own flavor.

Gondry said he wrote the first couple drafts of the screenplay without any particular actor in mind, although he did want the character to be kind of dim and aloof, while also witty and funny. Sounds like JB all the way, eh?

So when Gondry heard Jack was interested in the flick, he went full force and more or less casted him on the spot. They then looked over the screenplay and tweaked to Jack's strengths (not unlike what Apatow and crew do). I guess there was also a lot of improv on set, between Jack and Mos Def and some of the other supporting cast. Gondry said the thing he liked most about Jack was his willingness to go as far as he could for the role -- not matter what silly situation Gondry put him in, Jack would approach it very seriously and professionally, a juxtaposition Gondry found to be rare in actors working in Hollywood today. He said he would work again with Jack in a heartbeat.

So based on that, and the clips we saw of the film, Jack Black fans should make a point not to miss this flick. The stuff they showed was hysterical, and the movie just looks great overall. High on the visuals -- typical Gondry. Feb. 22 can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

Michel Gondry with Frat Pack Fan Paul Searle

Maybe this is why Paul looks a bit bummed in the photo above, but the release date for Be Kind is now February 22, not January 25. Please adjust your calendars accordingly.

New Step Brothers Photo Surfaces
by Rick Duran

A new promo photo for Step Brothers surfaced today. The Adam McKay-helmed comedy stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly who are looking rather spiffy in this shot.

It's been a long time since Will Ferrell has starred in a movie that didn't involve a ridiculous hairstyle or outlandish costuming. Step Brothers opens on July 25, 2008.

Some nice details from Sunday's issue of Parade Magazine with Mr. "Wild West Comedy Show" on the cover.

Marley and Me Still Greenlit with Owen and Jen
by Kevin Crossman

We haven't heard much about this project ever since Owen, well, you know... But word comes today that Little Miss Sunshine and Get Smart costar Alan Arkin has been cast as the editor of a newspaper that Wilson's character works at. The film is scheduled to start filming later this spring for a December 2008 release.

The film was originally going to shoot this month but was delayed by a variety of factors including Jennifer Aniston's work in He's Just Not That Into You, Management and the currently filming Traveling. Aniston plays the wife of Wilson's character and the two decide to adopt a dog to provide a test for parenthood. The Lab is a handful, and their lives are turned upside down.

Smiley Face on DVD Today
by Sharon Gruber

A reminder that the stoner-comedy starring Anna Faris and John Krasinski is available on DVD today.

This film is by far one of the funniest films I have seen in a while. The narration reminds me a bit of Idiocracy. The storyline isn’t very strong, but the comedy throughout is definitely worth the watch. I didn’t leave with a feeling of Smiley Face being a great film, but it did make an impact on me in some way as to where I would say that this is one of the most unique, and funniest pot smoking films that I have ever seen. Do go and see this film, at least once.

Juno Soundtrack Now in Stores
by Kevin Crossman

The soundtrack to Jason Reitman's critically acclaimed Juno is finally available in stores. The digital version has been number one at iTunes for some time but for those who like their music on CD can now get the soundtrack. Some of the key tracks from the movie are included, including the Ellen Page and Michael Cera duet "Anyone Else But You."

Jack Black To Be a Daddy Again
by Aaron Comer

Looks like Jack Black's personal school of rock can count on at least one more enrollee. The big-screen funnyman and wife Tanya Haden are expecting their second child together, the actor revealed during a press junket for his latest film, Be Kind Rewind, Saturday.

"Yes, she's expecting," he told reporters. The duo, who eloped in March 2006, already have one son together, 19-month-old Samuel.

The 36-year-old star offered no elaboration on the pending stork delivery, including the due date or sex of the latest addition. However, he did say he was up for the challenge of another Black offspring, despite intimidating warnings about the increased parenting difficulty.

"I've been told that two children is three times as hard as one child, but then strangely, three children is easier than one," he said, adding that, for the time being, his new parenting strategy is simply to take it "day by day."

Black and Haden, 35, first met while attending high school in Los Angeles, when Black had an admittedly unreciprocated crush on the musician. However, 20 years and one successful movie is a professional cellist who performed in the Hadecareer later, Black was able to woo his onetime high school sweetheart after a chance meeting at a friend's party in 2005.

Be Kind Rewind opens on January 25.

New Film with many Frat Pack Connections
by Peter, MANpants Blog

I've got a news tip about a new film with Frat Pack connections that I haven't read about anywhere else yet. Comingsoon.net reported the news, but I connected a few dots...

Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux (Zoolander, Tropic Thunder) will star in Turkey in the Straw. Comingsoon.net describes the film as " a dark comedy set in the South, follows the eccentric Dale Slocum as he moves to Habersham County, Georgia and launches a campaign for county commissioner against the beloved incumbent, Ben Kesee." The cast will also include John Goodman and Amy Sedaris. (It's unclear who will be playing which character.)

How does this film have Frat Pack connections? Well... For starters you've got Rudd and Theroux starring. Then, note that the movie will be directed by Craig Zobel, who made his debut last year with the acclaimed comedy Great World of Sound. Turkey will be written by Zobel and Barlow Jacobs (one of the actors from Great World of Sound).

Zobel is one of a handful of indie filmmakers emerging from the south, specifically the Carolinas. This group of filmmaking friends also includes David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Jody Hill. When you look at the Frat pack connections to these other filmmakers, it seems inevitable that Zobel would join the group sooner or later. David Gordon Green directed Pineapple Express, and McBride and Hill's film The Foot Fist Way (rumored to be amazingly funny) is being distributed this spring care of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.

There you have it. Yet another example of how the ever-expanding group known as the Frat Pack picks out the best new talent to work with. Turkey in the Straw will probably be in theaters this fall.

Help Me Tom Cruise!
by Rick Duran

Story to keep an eye on: Tom Cruise's United Artists Pictures becomes the first studio to independently reach an agreement with the WGA. Like the agreement with David Letterman's Worldwide Pants production company, this could greenlight writers to work on movie projects owned by UA.

Steve Carell, Owen Wilson and Jonah Hill have all yet to announce their strike era film plans, while Vince Vaughn could now take on a post-Four Christmases role. It'll be interesting to see what big projects UA now has the exclusive access to. Here's hoping at least one is from the actors we focus on.

With the changing of the year, we've made some changes to the Frat Pack Tribute Editorial Board. These are the folks who help bring you our site and podcast, and whose love for all things Frat Pack knows no bounds.

In particular, congrats to two new senior editors, joining Rick Duran and myself.
