Preview East Bound and Down
by Rick Duran
FunnyorDie is streaming the season premiere of Flight of the Conchords. At the end of the episode, there is a two minute preview of HBO's series from Will Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions, East Bound and Down.
The series stars Danny McBride as a washed up former all-star pitcher who returns to his hometown and ends up taking a job as a teacher. Created by Jody Hill, Ben Best and Danny McBride, the show shares a similar style to their breakthrough comedy The Foot Fist Way. The show also stars Katy Mixon (Four Christmases), John Hawkes and Andrew Daly (Semi-Pro).
The preview has brief interviews with Will and Danny, including a glimpse of the character Will be playing in an upcoming episode. The show premieres on HBO in February.

Marley & Me Largest Christmas Day Opening Ever
by Kevin Crossman
Look, we know that we're about the only website covering this movie as an Owen Wilson / Jennifer Aniston flick, rather than the way every other media outlet on planet Earth views it. And, yes, the cute puppy is doing his fair share at getting folks interested. But, nonetheless, we're please to report that various estimate have put the opening day total at between $13-15 million - the largest ever for an opening day on Christmas.

For "Team Aniston" this is great news in a number ways. First, it reinforces her ability to sell a movie (I guess all those magazine covers have paid off). Second, she wins the box office battle with former hubby Brad Pitt (Benjamin Button pulled an estimated $11 million on Christmas).
And what about Mr. Owen Wilson? Word is that Owen took a bit paycut to use Marley as a comeback vehicle. It looks like those efforts have paid off handsomely. And with a plum role in the Night at the Museum sequel, we hope Owen's career is back on track.
Merry Christmas

All of us here at the Tribute are wishing you a warm and happy Christmas. To celebrate, we've invited Dewey Cox himself to sing his signature holiday tune, "For Christmas, the People Want Cox."
Marley & Me Opens Christmas Day
by Bonnie Chapman
A reminder that Owen Wilson's latest movie Marley & Me opens tomorrow. The reviews for this seem to be mixed. Here's a positive review. The reviewer goes back and forth in calling Owen's character John and Josh, hehe.
It seems the director of Bedtime Stories is a bit ticked he has competition for the family audience on Christmas Day. Adam Shankman says "I have an issue with the way it's being marketed, because I think parents will look at that and say, 'Oh, cute dog movie! I can take my kid to it!'" Of course, Shankman is referencing some sad moments in the film (moments included in the book that was a best-seller).
He sounds a bit childish IMO. And if I was him I'd be ignoring the competition and pay more attention on promoting a Disney movie that stars an actor that's been in nothing-but R-rated raunchy foul-mouthed movies and a foul-mouthed actor that makes fun of teenage virginity (and Disney's popular with kids music group). That would be more off putting to me than the ending of Marley & Me.
I saw Old Yeller as a child and it didn't scar me. Some of the things kids are subjected to these days people don't bat an eye, but the ending of Marley is damaging?
Even if M&M wasn't coming out on Christmas Day, I still wouldn't go see Bedtime Stories.
Ben Stiller Breaks Hand Snowboarding
by Kevin Crossman
Guess they got the title for last year's romantic farce set in Mexico, as you can now call Ben Stiller the "Handbreak Kid." Ben was admitted on Sunday to New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was treated for a fracture.
"I can confirm he broke his hand snowboarding," said publicist Kelly Bush.
By all reports, Ben is already on the mend. All of us here at the Tribute send best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Will Ferrell Fan Forum Gaining Traction
by Kevin Crossman
We're pretty happy with our official Frat Pack Forum, but understand there are times where you really want to dig into the details of your favorite comedy star. For times like these, the Will Ferrell Fan Forum fills an important and pressing social need.
According to Ricky Bobby, this is the "Best Forum Ever Made" and features sections for all of Will's films and sections dedicated to SNL, Photos and Videos, News Desk, and more. Some of our Tribute board members are hanging out, and you should too!
Land of the Lost Teaser One-Sheet
by Kevin Crossman
The normally reliable folks at Universal seemed to have dropped the ball a bit on this one. Today, they released a teaser poster for the highly anticipated summer blockbuster, Land of the Lost.
Now, don't get me wrong. There are a lot of things to like in this poster, like the cool looking dinosaur, homages to the original TV series with things like the raft and the Sleestack mountain, and the title font. Of course, Will Ferrell front and center is welcome and appropriate.
But, I've got to say... there's a lot I'm not happy about. First off, doesn't Danny McBride deserve at least some mention here? The brother got better treatment with Tropic Thunder where he was sixth or seventh billed, rather than being the second lead here. First his name was left off the Pineapple Express poster and now this. I can just picture this: "Hey, isn't that the guy who was on the Pineapple Express poster?" "You mean Seth Rogen?" "No, that other guy who's name wasn't listed..." "Oh, yeah... what's that guy's name, anyway?"
Worse however is the awful Photoshop job on this. Unless all the creatures have some sort of oil-painting look and the humans have a shot-on-video clarity then the details of this poster are let's say quite a bit off. See the details for yourself:
Fake, Fake, Fakey

Say what you will about Get Smart, a film with a similar action-comedy-remake aesthetic as Land of the Lost. You never felt that the quality of that production was in question. But I can't say the same thing about this one.
Time to release that teaser trailer, fellas...
Museum 2 Trailer Features Hill, Hader and is Hilarious
by Kevin Crossman
Now appearing exclusively at McDonalds' HappyMeal.com of all places, the trailer for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is now available. I watched this with my kids and my ten year old would probably give up TV for a month if he could see this today. My six year old seemed interested, too.
And as for Dad? Well, I gotta say the encounter with Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill was absolutely hilarious. And I really liked Bill Hader's riff on Sacajawea's name. Along the way, there is some nice footage of familiar costars like Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan along with series newcomers Amy Adams and Hank Azaria.

So, I might have been a little on the fence about this movie before, but it's now leading my most anticipated list for 2009.
Thanks to Mike for the tip.
Funny People Live Event and Filming
by Kevin Crossman
As you may be aware, Judd Apatow's next film is set in the world of stand-up comedy (hence the name: Funny People). And if you'd like an early view into the comedy from the movie be sure to pick up tickets for this upcoming live event.
A Night of Funny People
January 13
Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA
Tickets are $20, and they'll go on sale through Ticketmaster at 12pm on Friday, December 19. You can call (213) 480-3232 or visit Ticketmaster.com, and you must be over 18 in order to watch the show.
The film stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Aziz Ansari, Jason Schwartzman, RZA, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, and Aubrey Plaza. The evening will be hosted by Apatow, and the performers will perform live in character. Patton Oswalt will also appear.
"A Night of Funny People" will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and 826LA, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages six to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
Meanwhile, /film is reporting that several comedians have cameos in the film, likely playing themselves. The comedians include Dave Attell, Sarah Silverman, Norm MacDonald, and Andy Dick.
Couples Retreat Profile
by Kevin Crossman
USA Today ran a great story about Couples Retreat, Vince Vaughn's next movie and currently filming. The film stars Vaughn along with Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, Faizon Love, and Kali Hawk.
In the story by Susan Wloszczyna, Vaughn says "I had the concept a while ago, and Favreau did the first draft of the screenplay with specific actors in mind." And Faveau seems have built a nice set of diverse relationships. Vaughn describes the couples: "Jason and Kristen are Type A's struggling to have kids. Faizon and his wife (Kali Hawk) have just separated, and he is dating a young girl from Foot Locker. Me and my wife (Malin Akerman of 27 Dresses) are swamped with the kids and work. Favreau and Kristin Davis are secretly not completely faithful to each other."

With the recent spate of R-rated comedies in 2008, does Couples Retreat continue the trend? No, says Vaughn. "We don't believe in swearing for swearing's sake," Vaughn says. Not that there won't be sexual gags, including "yoga teachers who are overly enthusiastic about putting people into poses."
Rudd and Segel's I Love You, Man Trailer
by Kevin Crossman
We're trying not to get our hopes up too high for this "bromance" starring Apatow regulars Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. The official website is now available (though there's not much there) but more importantly a trailer is now available. Head on over to Yahoo! Movies for the I Love You, Man trailer.
The film is scheduled for release in March.

Bid on Jenna Fischer's Signed Pet Bowl for Charity
by Josh Watts
Jenna Fischer (The Office, Blades of Glory) brought this up in her blog entry, though I doubt it'll end up in any of our price ranges. The auction closes on December 18th.
If you are looking for a unique Christmas gift...I've got just the thing!
I handpainted and signed a pet food bowl which is being auctioned off on eBay. The proceeds benefit the SPCA-LA - the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles. I've toured their facility. They have a great shelter and rescue many animals from abusive situations. They are wonderful animal advocates.
The bowl is small - it would be perfect for a cat or small dog.
If you would like to bid on the pet food bowl it is item 130275312544 on eBay.
Happy Holidays!
Rumored Office Guest Star Confirmed
by Kevin Crossman
We're of mixed mind regarding whether to spoil this one. It's kind of big news here in Fratville, as we said in coded form a few days ago. Then again, Universal has now issued a press release. So, it's expected that this will be big big big news by the time The Office's Super Bowl episode airs in February. The February 1st episode is titled "Stress Relief," and will follow the Scranton branch as they try to secretly watch a bootlegged Hollywood movie at work. The network did not say how Frat Pack will factor into the story line.
So, if you don't want to be spoiled, I guess we'll keep the charade up for a little longer. But, needless to say, this is big new for the Pack.

First Look at Spring Breakdown
by Kevin Crossman
We've been waiting a long time for this one. A really long time. Originally scheduled for release in 2007, this film will finally be available on DVD in 2009 after a short run at the Sundance Film Festival's "Park City at Midnight" lineup. The film stars a host of familiar faces including Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Parker Posey, Missi Pyle, Will Arnett, and Jane Lynch.
Here's a trailer that recently found it's way to the internet. It's true it kind of has that "straight to DVD, bad movie vibe" that we got from the Blonde Ambition and I Could Never Be Your Woman. But I actually enjoyed both films thanks to some great performances by Andy Dick in Ambition and Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer in Woman. So, I'm still on the Spring Breakdown bandwagon.
First Look at Seth Rogen in Observe & Report
by Kevin Crossman
This one has kind of been flying under the radar, but here are two great shots from Seth Rogen's spring comedy, Observe & Report, costarring Anna Faris. In the film, Rogen plays Ronnie Barnhardt (Rogen), a deluded, self-important head of mall security who squares off in a turf war against local cops. Faris plays a salesgirl at the mall in the film directed by Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way). The film is schedule for release on April 10, 2009.

Perhaps one reason we haven't heard a lot about the film is due to the mixed preview screenings. You see, Rogen isn't playing the lovable schlub we're used to. As our Editor Rick Duran put it: "The good news: Seth Rogen isn't playing Seth Rogen this time. The bad news: Audiences will probably not be able to handle this character."
According to a CHUD report, the love it or hate it vibe was in full effect at the screening:
The film had a test screening in the Los Angeles area this weekend, and I spoke to a couple of people who saw the current cut. I haven't seen it myself (although I wish I had gone), but I trust the opinions of these folks. It helps that they had the same take: this is a great film, but one that left half the test audience cold. The films that were mentioned in comparison to Observe & Report were Bad Santa, Taxi Driver (!) and Anchorman (in terms of intensity of laughs). One of my sources, a very non-PC type, said that some of the jokes made even him uncomfortable, which he loved. And the film apparently pushes the envelope not just in the comedy but in some violence, which includes a parody of the classic Oldboy hallway/hamer fight scene. Both of the people to whom I spoke tried not to oversell what they had seen, but both felt that it was an incredible film, magnitudes better and even funnier than Foot Fist.
Of course, Kevin James has a more lighthearted "mall security guard movie" coming out in January. So perhaps they're waiting to see how that does before unleashing the marketing blitz for Observe & Report.

Jack Black at the VGAs
by Kevin Crossman
Jack Black opened the SPIKE Video Game Awards with a rocking musical number quite similar to his Tenacious D material, and was joined on stage for a pivotal moment in the presentation by D partner Kyle Gass. Also appearing in the segment was Craig Robinson. Later in the show, Jerry Stiller joined Jack on stage.

Jack Black Hosting Video Game Awards on SPIKE Tonight
by Kevin Crossman
This one kind of snuck up on us (maybe because I'm 40 and only play video games on my iPhone, not a console). In any case, if this promo clip is any indication this could be a great opportunity for host Jack Black to "let loose." The show airs at 9 pm on your local cable system as well as the SPIKE website.
Amy Poehler Says Goodbye from SNL
by Kevin Crossman
Gotta says it was a good thing that Fred Armisen entered the frame or I might have really lost it when viewing Amy Poehler's final report from Weekend Update. We'll miss Amy on the show, of course, but she has a high-profile TV show coming in 2009 and we certainly expect to see her on the big screen as well.
Will Ferrell's Bush Stage Show Coming to HBO in March
by Kevin Crossman
For those of you who can't make it to Broadway to see Will Ferrell's show “You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush,” there is good news. The show opens January 20 at the Cort Theatre, but HBO will be produce a special broadcast of the show. Airdate is not yet known.

Steve Carell's Role in the Pack
by Kevin Crossman
Even though most consider him a member of the Frat Pack, truth be told Steve Carell hasn't really done anything to keep those credentials since his pledge moment on SNL. He was offered a role in Talladega Nights, and there is chatter about an Anchorman sequel, but there's no word on his Pack-friendly "Guys Backpacking" script.
Of course, Carell's actual Frat Pack credentials were thin to begin with and had more to do with a string of costarring gigs opposite Will Ferrell and of course a star breakthrough in The 40 Year-Old Virgin. Since then, Carell has certainly surrounded himself with a number of Frat Pack friends like Jonah Hill and David Koechner, but there's nothing on the horizon that suggests a true partnership with the Pack.
That said, there is a rumor from Michael Ausiello's column in Entertainment Weekly this week. The Office will have a one-hour episode following the Super Bowl and the plot seems like a hoot and is ripe for guest stars.
Of interest for us here in Fratland, Ausiello is reporting that there is a very "large" guest star being tapped for the episode. I've gone on record that I don't want The Office to do "stunt casting" ala 30 Rock and Friends (though I thought some of those stunt casting things were funny).
That said... while it would be a black day for The Office, it could be a bright day for "the Pack."
Update: if you couldn't figure out which Fratter we were talking about, you can see Ausiello's column online now.

Tom Cruise Scores Shocking Golden Globes Nomination
by Kevin Crossman
The Golden Globe nominations were announced today. In addition to expected nominations for The Office and Steve Carell in their respective TV categories, we were closely watching the film nominations. And for that, congrats to James Franco for a Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his stoner role in Pineapple Express.
Some had expected Tropic Thunder to pull a Best Comedy or Musical nomination, but it did not end up with a nom. However, in the Supporting Actor category we were pleased to see Kirk Lazarus Robert Downey Jr.'s name on the list. Unlike the lead categories, the supporting actor nominations include performances from both dramas and comedies.
And who will Downey compete against? A list of usual suspects, including Heath Ledger, Ralph Fiennes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and... Tom Cruise? Yes, shockingly and amazingly, the Globes nominated Cruise for his foul and profane performance as studio head Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder! I'm actually happier for this nomination than if Tropic had been nommed for Best Picture.

Congrats to Cruise and Downey on their nominations! Now, somebody get me a Diet Coke!

"Kirk Lazarus" Oscar Campaign Hits Stride
by Kevin Crossman
Gotta say, wouldn't it be great if Robert Downey Jr. scored an Oscar nomination for his edgy role in Tropic Thunder? Well, the Broadcast Film Critics think so, nominating him for Best Supporting Actor today. Tropic Thunder was also nominated for Best Comedy opposite Role Models and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, among others.
The studio has been running "Lazarus" ads on various websites and the latest print add is amazing.

Box Office Update
by Rick Duran
A few notes from this weekend's box office estimates:
Owen Wilson Is Doing Press for Marley and Me
by Kevin Crossman
Contrary to my comments a couple days ago, it turns out that Owen Wilson is indeed doing at least some press interviews to promote Marley and Me. An article from Bob Thompson does confirm that Owen is consenting to interviews. Thanks to Bonnie for the tip.

Belated Thoughts on Zack and Miri
by Rick Duran
I finally got a chance to see this. Enjoyed it, but one thing bothered me: too short.
Rogen and Banks were great, definitely some of the strongest performances Smith has directed. Likewise, I was very happy to see Craig Robinson being used so effectively. But the film's 90 minute runtime didn't allow many moments from its supporting cast (for as much as Smith hyped Traci Lords, she has what, two speaking scenes?)
One of the reasons a lot of the "long" comedies of the last 3 years work is because we have a lot more time to enjoy scene-stealers. Here, I think most of the smaller roles were limited to the screentime of Jonah Hill in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Again, I liked this. Not bad at all.
But coming from someone who considers Smith and Rogen as two of the "voices of my generation," I was hoping for just a little bit more. Just a little.

Jack Black and John C. Reilly Discuss "Prop 8 - the Musical"
by Kevin Crossman
With over two million downloads in two days, Prop 8 - the Musical seems to be the meme of the moment. The clip's creator, Marc Shaiman appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann tonight along with the video's stars, Jack Black and John C. Reilly.

Jennifer Aniston Calls Role Models One of Her Favorite... Tearjerkers?
by Kevin Crossman
No, that's not a misprint and no we're not talking about some obscure movie that happens to share a title with the current comedy hit from Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott. Addressing the Kleenex-friendly ending of Marley and Me, Aniston was asked about her favorite tearjerkers for an Entertainment Weekly cover story. Along with likely candidates The Champ and Terms of Endearment, Jenn actually mentioned Role Models.
"I teared up. I was just moved - it was so sweet. It all depends on your mood, doesn't it?"
So, based on that quote I guess those looking for that perfect gift for Jenn this Christmas should consider any KISS anthology containing the track "Beth." Which would be a good thing since it isn't like Aniston gets a break when she does press interviews to promote her movies (there appears to have been some celebrity drama in Jenn's past, though I'm unclear on the details). And, once again, it looks like Owen is dodging the press (though as Vince Vaughn would tell you that doesn't mean your movie can't succeed). So, Jenn is really holding up her end of the bargain, so to speak.
As if you need any reminder, Jenn's movie with Owen Wilson, Marley and Me, opens on Christmas.
The Grammy Voters Want Cox?
by Kevin Crossman
Congrats to Judd Apatow, Marshall Crenshaw, Jake Kasdan, and John C. Reilly. The title song from their movie Walk Hard was nominated for a Grammy for Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media (a songwriter award).

The song will compete against Down To Earth (from Wall-E), Ever Ever After (from Enchanted), Say (from The Bucket List), and That's How You Know (from Enchanted).
The 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on "GRAMMY Sunday," Feb. 8, 2009, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The awards are for recordings released during the Eligibility Year ( October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008). Complete list of Grammy Award nominees.
Jack Black and John C. Reilly Highlight All-Star Cast in Gay Marriage Video
by Kevin Crossman
I'm posting this not as an endorsement of gay marriage, but to highlight the latest spectacle over at Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's video site, FunnyorDie.com. This video is pro-gay marriage and features an all-star cast led by Jack Black as Jesus and John C. Reilly as an anti-gay marriage advocate.
Other familiar faces include Andy Richter, Craig Robinson, Rashida Jones, Maya Rudolph, Allison Janney, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Chalke, and Margaret Cho. The piece was conceived and written by Marc Shaiman, the man behind Black and Reilly's Oscar song "A Comedian at the Oscars."
Step Brothers Home Video Drops Today
by Kevin Crossman
Step Brothers was a big hit for Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, and is arguably the summer's funniest movie and most similar in tone to past Frat Pack classics. So, it's with high anticipation that the DVD arrives in stores today. Adam McKay's third film was hilarious and the home video to get is the Blu-Ray or 2 Disc DVD that contains a wealth of features.

Zoolander 2 Rumors
by Rick Duran
Ben Stiller confirmed he has been working on a sequel to 2001's Frat Pack classic, Zoolander.
According to Contact Music, Stiller has been in talks to start production and is looking at scripts. He said, "I've been trying to get Zoolander 2 together and we've had a few scripts. I feel that is the sequel I really would like to do some day because I like the original and I would make sure it was something new and worthy of it first."
No word on whether Zoolander costars Owen Wilson, Christine Taylor, Will Ferrell, or Vince Vaughn would be on board for the sequel. Stiller also confirmed he is working on a third Fockers film.
Kudos for Tropic Thunder and (New Fratter?) Downey
by Kevin Crossman
Congrats to Tropic Thunder and actor Robert Downey Jr. for scoring nominations from the Golden Satellite Awards (an offshoot awards from The Golden Globes). See the complete list of nominations.
Tropic Thunder was nominated for Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. Other nominees were Happy-Go-Lucky,
Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,
Vicky Cristina Barcelona, In Bruges, and Choke.
Downey was nominated for Actor in a Supporting Role against against some familiar faces who are competing to see who will lose to Heath Ledger. The other nominees are Michael Shannon - Revolutionary Road, Rade Sherbedgia - Fugitive Pieces, James Franco - Milk, Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight, Philip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt.
If Downey's run continues all the way to an Oscar nomination it would be an amazing feat considering Tropic Thunder's edgy subject matter. Of course, Downey has had a "heroic" year and some may feel a Supporting Nomination for his blackface role in Tropic may be a way to reward him for an amazing comeback.
In related news, we were turned onto this video with Downey alongside Jack Black and Ben Stiller (thanks Becky and Karen). It's nine minutes long but at the eight minute mark Black seems to compare Downey's superhero crew to the comedic clique known as the Frat Pack. Jack even seems to invite him into the group, though Ben Stiller's pained expression seems to indicate a Will Ferrell-like aversion to the name.
Four Christmases Big Present at Box Office
by Kevin Crossman
Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon were champions of the box office, with Four Christmases finishing number one over the extended Thanksgiving weekend. The film made $31.7 million over the Friday-Sunday period, according to estimates, and has banked $46.7 million since opening on Wednesday. Looks like audiences were eager to see a straight comedy involving non-animated characters (though we loved the "cartoonish" character played by Jon Favreau in Christmases).
The film is a return to box office form for Vince, who's last holiday film Fred Claus underperformed.

I caught the film over the weekend and must say Vince is hilarious in the movie. Yes, the film is contrived (and Bay Area residents will note it is geographically inaccurate). And a couple scenes with Reese Witherspoon are too-obviously reshoots thanks to a terrible wig. There are also a couple characters that are badly underwritten. But none of that matters with Vince throwing wisecracks left and right, and with great supporting turns from Favreau, Steenburgen, Duvall, and Voight to keep things going.
And while the film has some issues, it definitely is Vince's funniest film since Wedding Crashers. ![]()
Vince Vaughn Headlines Four Christmases Opening Today
by Kevin Crossman
We are looking forward to seeing Vince's latest cinematic farce that is opening in theatres today. The film costars Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde), and feature a host of Vince's pals including Jon Favreau, Dwight Yoakam, Patrick Van Horn, Peter Billingsley and features an all-star cast including Robert Duvall (Kicking and Screaming), Mary Steenburgen (Elf, Step Brothers), Kristin Chenoweth (Bewitched), Sissy Spacek, Tim McGraw, and Jon Voight (Tropic Thunder).

I'm not sure what to think about the movie. It's great to see Vince again, and Favs' part looks like a hoot (see below). But Vince was a no-show at the premiere earlier this month and has dodged the press. And following the box office disappointment that was Fred Claus, I don't know how this film will play with the public.

Have you seen Four Christmases? Talk about it on the Vince-Vaughn.com message board.

Christmas Come Early... Fred Claus on Home Video
by Kevin Crossman
While Fred Claus probably won't be entered in the Vince Vaughn pantheon, there were some interesting moments in this comedy from last year. The film makes it's home video debut today.

Costarring Paul Giamati and featuring Elizabeth Banks, John Michael Higgins, Kathy Bates, Kevin Spacey, and directed by David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), Fred Claus was a mild box office disappointment last fall. The film suffers from a "Bad Santa-ish" first act and a heartwarming third act, so the film is a little bit of a mixed bag. Plus, the special effects aren't always special. That said, Vince is good form and we'll always welcome Elizabeth Banks in the Santa outfit...

The film arrives not in stockings but in DVD stores today. There are a few extras, including deleted scenes and a commentary with director David Dobkin.
New Bottle Rocket DVD Available Tuesday
by Kevin Crossman
Fans of Owen and Luke Wilson's debut film Bottle Rocket are excited that the long-awaited Criterion Connection edition hitting stores this week. Co-written by Owen Wilson and director Wes Anderson, Bottle Rocket made a splash when it was released back in 1996. In fact, the film was the primary reason that Ben Stiller cast Owen for a memorable scene in The Cable Guy. And the rest, they say, is history.

I do like most of Wes Anderson's films, but Bottle Rocket is my favorite. There's a brilliant performance from Owen who really drives the action in the film, and a surprisingly effective love story that Luke plays wonderfully. If you haven't seen this film yet, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Purchase Bottle Rocket at Amazon.com.
The DVD and Blu-Ray released on Tuesday contain many Director-Approved Special Features:

by Kevin Crossman
New parents Will Arnett and Amy Poehler were seen for the first time since the October 25th birth of their son Archie. The couple appeared at the American Museum of Natural History gala in New York. While there, Amy was able to catch up with former SNL costar, Kristen Wiig.

Gotta say, motherhood seems to be doing wonders; Amy looks great! One more thing though. If you don't want us to stare, don't wear a low-cut dress. Okay?
Outburst Webisodes Are "Appointment TV"
by Kevin Crossman
A reminder for Frat Pack Tribute readers that I am co-hosting the That's What She Said podcast, all about NBC's The Office.
NBC.com is featuring the first in a four-part webisode series called "The Outburst" today. Though most fans of The Office were underwhelmed by the previous webisode series, "The Accountants" and "Kevin's Loan", fans will surely find this one more satisfying. "The Outburst" features a much larger cast of supporting actors from The Office and the writing and direction is on-par with broadcast episodes of the show.
The plot is fairly simple and shown during the first episode of the series. Oscar (Oscar Nunez) screams at someone on the telephone and storms off in anger, setting off curiosity by the others in the office. Andy (Ed Helms) offers a $100 bounty on who can find out who Oscar was talking to, setting off a series of vignettes where the other employees play amateur-detective. In the fourth episode, we learn who Oscar directed the outburst towards - and the result may surprise you.

Directed by Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky and written by Nate Federman & Jonathan Hughes, "The Outburst" feels like an eleven minute broadcast episode - albeit without the "big five" stars Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, and B.J. Novak. For example, there is an intense conclusion to the third episode that features Oscar addressing the rest of the office as well as the documentary team that may get you to jump from your seat in excitement and perhaps fear. The participation of nearly the entire supporting cast really sets this webisode series apart. Every supporting player except Craig Robinson is on board, including Toby (Paul Leiberstein) who is returning to the show. There are several scenes that use Creed (Creed Bratton) effectively and a hilarious scene with Kelly (Mindy Kaling) that will warm the hearts of cellphone fans everywhere.
Perhaps what sets "The Outburst" apart is the effective use of the character of Oscar. As shown in episodes like "Business Trip" the character is more nuanced than often portrayed and Nunez is given a lot of room to stretch the character. Unlike Brian Baumgartner's one-note portrayal of Kevin in "Kevin's Loan," Nunez keeps fans interested with a range of emotions including anger, exasperation, and a bit of condescension.
Every fan of The Office should go out of their way to watch "The Outburst." The interplay between the characters is top-notch and the writing is crisp and hilarious. Additionally, unlike "Kevin's Loan" this series has a great payoff to the mystery in the fourth episode. In fact, the twist is so good you'll want to go back and rewatch the series to see the clues that were sprinkled along the way.
"The Outburst" is hilarious and is "appointment TV" for your computer.

Rudd/Segel "Bromance" Release Date Updated
by Kevin Crossman
Take this as a positive outcome of the better-than-expected returns of Paul Rudd's hit comedy Role Models. His next movie, I Love You, Man, has been moved from January 16th (the month where studios traditionally dump movies) to a much more friendly release date of March 20, according to Variety.
I Love You, Man tells the story of a newly engaged man (Rudd) who looks for the perfect best man (Segel). The movie is directed by John Hamburg, who's last directing gig was Along Came Polly with Ben Stiller (a film that defintely beat the "January release curse" when it was released in 2004).
Ben Stiller Roasted by Jack Black, Judd Apatow, Parents, and More
by Kevin Crossman
Ben Stiller continues to wrack up awards as he was honored at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York this week. Honoring Ben were his parents Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, plus co-stars like Jack Black, Robert DeNiro, Judd Apatow, Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Mike Myers, and Amy Adams, as well as Bill Hader from "Saturday Night Live" and Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Tom Cruise kicked off the evening with a video greeting and then Jack Black commented on getting dressed for the black tie event and being rejected by Bergdorf Goodman. "Eighteen a half inches! It’s too big for this store. You might want to go down the block. I walked three blocks to the big and tall store where I was welcomed with loving arms by my people!"
Robert DeNiro recalled a memorable scene from Meet the Parents, "So, Ben comes out and you expect to see a shlubby body and instead he comes out and is totally buff. Ben, being the terrific actor that he is, overcomes this contradiction by having a really tiny dick. And thanks to the tiny bathing suit, it's apparent to everyone!" Both Stiller and DeNiro were talking about a third Fockers film being very likely at this point.
Diddy talked about Tropic Thunder's edgy humor, saying "I have not been in any of Ben Stiller’s movies. I guess I wasn’t black enough to be in Tropic Thunder. Robert Downey, Jr was a little bit blacker. I tried out for the role but I came up short. I put him in one of my music videos and I thought he would return the favor."
Ben Stiller Show co-creator Judd Apatow appeared on video with Funny People's Adam Sandler. Apatow noted that Ben gave him his first big break, “I was writing jokes for Tom Arnold. Apparently that was good enough for Ben!” Then Sandler noted “This feels really kiss-a-y. You’re your own guy now, Judd. You don’t need to blow Stiller for the rest of your life.”
Jerry Stiller roasted his son, exclaiming "One thing that went through my mind watching all this tonight, Am I the father?"
Ben dedicated the award to former parody target, Bono. "Just so I have something in common with him other than knowing all the words to Achtung, Baby."
Christine Taylor is impressed by Ben's award

Robert Downey Jr. Named Entertainer of the Year
by Kevin Crossman
Entertainment Weekly has named their Top 25 Entertainers of the Year, and topping the list is Robert Downey, Jr. Of course, Downey's big superhero turn in Iron Man is the driving factor, but without his memorable role in Tropic Thunder he probably wouldn't be topping this list. Meanwhile, Downey's name is being dropped as a potential Best Supporting Actor nominee for his role as "the dude playing the dude, disquised as another dude." While Tropic Thunder did earn generally positive reviews, the changes for an edgy, yet mainstream comedy at Oscar-time are slim.

A reminder that the DVD and BluRay editions of Tropic Thunder are dropping this Tuesday. Any fan of the film should pick up the two-disc edition that features a "director's cut" of the film along with commentary with Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. (who remains in character). There's another commentary track with Stiller, screenwriter Justin Theroux, and others.
There is a wealth of extras on the second disc, including
Before the Thunder (5 minutes), which documents the movie’s story development and pre-production.Funny People Poster and Walk-On Role Contest
by Kevin Crossman
This is an awfully appealing poster for Judd Apatow's next directing gig, Funny People (starring three people who should need no introduction, even with Seth Rogen's recent weight loss).

This is clearly a high-profile and highly anticipated film for 2009. We're excited. We know you're excited. Now, time to put that excitement to good use by entering a contest for a walk-on role in the film! And who better to explain this than Judd Apatow himself...
To enter, contestants must log into MySpace and friend the Funny People official MySpace page www.myspace.com/funnypeople. Then in 100 words or less, users must leave a comment explaining why he or she should win the role. The deadline for submissions is December 8, 2008. Winners will be judged on quality of expression, originality, and enthusiasm.
This MySpace page is a hoot and features some great shots of the stars and supporting players from the film.

Steve Carell and Friends Signed for New 3D Animated Film
by Rick Duran
Steve Carell will voice the title character in Despicable Me, a new 3D animated film from Universal Pictures-based family film unit Illumination Entertainment. Horton Hears a Who's Chris Meledandri is producing from a script from Horton writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin are directing.

Joining Steve are the voices of Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Russell Brand, Jack McBrayer, along with Jemaine Clement ("Flight of the Conchords") and Julie Andrews. The film will be released in 2010.
According to Variety, "Carell's title character is a deplorable man known as Groo who masterminds the mother of all heists when he plots to steal the moon. Egged on by an evil mother (Andrews), Groo finds one obstacle in his way: a trio of orphan girls who temporarily come under his care and won't leave."
Jane Lynch Interview
Jane Lynch has been one of the most recognizable comedic actresses
of the decade. In Universal Pictures' Role Models, she gives
one of her most insane performances yet as Gail Sweeney, head of the Sturdy
Wings mentoring program.

The Frat Pack Tribute was part of a roundtable interview session with Lynch for a chat about Role Models, her impressive career and even her love of Ben Stiller.
Paul Rudd Hosting SNL This Week
by Kevin Crossman
Thanks to Beth Millman and others who reminded us that Paul Rudd, supporting player from Anchorman and Knocked Up leading man from Role Models, is hosting SNL this week. Check out these fun promos with Andy Samberg.
Jennifer Aniston Opens Up
by Kevin Crossman
With Marley and Me coming out on Christmas, expect to see a lot of press with costars Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. First up is a great profile of Jen in the December issue of Vogue.
In addition to an absolutely gorgeous photo of absolutely gorgeous Jen, there's a lot of gossipy insight to Jen's state of mind regarding her splits with Brad Pitt (and some of the comments made by Angelina Jolie) and John Mayer.
Talking about Marley and Me costar Owen Wilson, Jen says "Everything he went through in the last year really allowed for a beautiful performance. He arrives in this film."
Aniston also talks about a new project she's helping develop called Pumas. "It's sort of a female Wedding Crashers. It's about these girls who aspire to become cougars. They just paaarty! Young party girls who just find hot young guys to play with and then dump them. Why can't women do it?"
Role Models Exceeds Friday Estimates
by Kevin Crossman
Just a quick box office update. Role Models exceeded Friday's estimates and made $19.1 million this weekend. That's a great start for the Paul Rudd / Seann William Scott comedy and is positioned well for a great November as there are no comedies opening wide until Four Christmases arrives on November 26.

I had the opportunity to see Role Models and it's definitely director David Wain's best effort. In addition to Rudd and Scott, there are great performances from many of the actors. Our favorite was Jane Lynch, who is hilarious as a guidance counselor with a shady past. Our podcast/interview with Lynch is coming tomorrow.
In a related box office note, Zack and Miri dropped 38%, which isn't an awful drop especially for a movie that is underperforming at the box office. Which is really a shame because I thought Zack and Miri was both funnier and more emotionally touching than Role Models.
Role Models Director David Wain Interview
by Rick Duran
Director David Wain has developed a loyal cult following from his television work in Stella, the State and independent filmmaking efforts Wet Hot American Summer and The Ten. With the arrival of Universal Pictures' Role Models, Wain makes his first mainstream studio comedy, featuring many familiar faces from his past projects.

The Frat Pack Tribute sat down with David Wain at the Role Models press day in Santa Monica, California, for a chat about his career and the transition into mainstream comedy.
Role Models is a Hit that "Exceeds All Expectations"
by Rick Duran
According to Nikki Finke, Role Models pulled in $6.5 million today and is on track for a Forgetting Sarah Marshall-style opening in the $17 million range. I guess Seann William Scott's interview comment about making a movie that actually makes money is coming true.
Meanwhile, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is on track for a $55 million opening weekend. The movie is getting largely "better than the original" reviews as well.
Role Models' Seann William Scott Interview
by Rick Duran
In Role Models, Seann William Scott plays a libido-minded character not too different from his star-making Stifler role from the American Pie trilogy. However, in real life he is a very honest, introspective person willing address career missteps and aspirations.

The Frat Pack Tribute had the opportunity to sit down with Scott for a fascinating interview during the Role Models press day in Santa Monica, California.
Big Week for DVDs; Get Smart, Tenacious D, Henry Poole, Panda
by Kevin Crossman
A couple of these kind of snuck up on us but it looks like a great week for DVD purchasing or at least a great time to add these to your wishlists.
Get Smart: Steve Carell's big summer hit comes to DVD in a couple editions, including the two-disc version we're featuring. The main disc includes a way to see alternate lines within the context of the movie, then go back to playing the feature. Very high-tech! There are tons of extras on the second disc too.
Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks 2: This one really snuck on us too, so check out the trailer below. This looks like a great insider look at Jack Black and Kyle Gass as they set out on their Pick of Destiny tour, and deal with the aftermath of their movie tanking at the box office.
The set features a one hour plus documentary, a full length live concert filmed in 2007 at the sold-out Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA, several bonus extras including the band's incredible performance on the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, their performance of "Master Exploder" on The Late Night with Conan O'Brien, an unforgettable performance of "The Metal" on Saturday Night Live, numerous Tenacious D videos and more!
Tenacious D "Complete Masterworks V.2" Official Trailer
Luke Wilson's Henry Poole is Here kind of got lost in the shuffle this summer, so why would the DVD release from Anchor Bay be any different. This is, apparently, on sale today. It's definitely a movie I am really interested in checking out. Luke seems well-cast in this film that may shake your fundamental foundations of religion (or, of George Lopez as an actor).
Coming to stores on Sunday is Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda starring Jack Black as the title character with Seth Rogen, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Chan, and others in supporting roles. The Sunday release date is very odd. I guess Dreamworks expects to get a big promo push with Madagascar 2 in theatres this weekend, or with the Sunday circulars.
In any case, Panda was a lot of fun and definitely transcended what could have been a lame paint-by-numbers picture (yes, we're looking at you, Madagascar 2...).
Role Models Review (
)
by Rick Duran
In his two previous outings, Director David Wain used absurdist humor, big ensembles and over-the-top endings, establishing him as one of independent film’s most notable comedy directors. In Role Models, Wain scales back the absurdist approach, showcasing that he can successfully apply his vision to a mainstream comedy. With a script co-written by star Paul Rudd, and an ensemble of talent from both Wain’s alumni from “The State” and Rudd’s Team Apatow roster, Role Models puts a foul-mouthed twist on a concept that other hands would have less from.
Role Models is not 2008’s best comedy, and there are some early pacing issues. But the film is an absolute crowd-pleaser and a huge showcase for some of the less-celebrated names in comedy (such as Joe Lo Truglio, who is replacing David Koechner as the go-to-for-cameo guy.) With its mix of big laughs, crude-language, heart, gratuitous nudity and face paint, Role Models is yet another winner of the current R-Rated comedy wave.
Zack and Miri Review (
)
by Drew Hunt
Indie filmmaker Kevin Smith has been doing raunch for over a decade. His benevolent, wise-cracking films seep with equal parts vulgarity and wit, and although he's never been known for his directing prowess, his unwavering fan base has stood by the chubby auteur for the entire ride. His latest effort, the sickeningly sweet Zack and Miri Make a Porno, is his latest foray into the heralded realm of "dick and fart jokes", this time enlisting the help of comedic super-star Seth Rogen and budding leading lady Elizabeth Banks.

Sound vulgar? You bet. But Zack and Miri is a tricky little bastard, a sweet-hearted chick flick covered in jizz that frequently hits comic G spots.
Zack and Miri Underperforms
by Kevin Crossman
Well, looks like the Halloween opening didn't help the box office for Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make Porno. The movie opened with just over $10 million for the weekend, falling far short of even modest expectations.
Fanboys Trailer
by Adam Stevenson
The new Fanboys trailer is up on Yahoo! Movies. It shows glimpses of Craig Robinson and Danny McBride as "That guy from The Office" and "That guy from Tropic Thunder." Though, strangely, there is little focus on the primary stars of the film. You know, like "Sarah Marshall" (Kristen Bell) or "That Other Guy from Tropic Thunder" (Jay Baruchel). Anyway, check out the new trailer for the oft-delayed movie now expected in early 2009.

Ben Stiller is Person of the Day
by Kevin Crossman
Thanks to Amy Gilbert for finding this great profile of Ben Stiller from America's News Today. In addition to an excellent photo of Ben (shown at right), the profile does provide a complete and well-written overview of Ben's career (we aren't exactly sad about the reference to our Tribute site, either).
Stiller is the "acknowledged leader" of the Frat Pack — according to a 2006 article on The-Frat-Pack.com —, a core group of actors that has worked together in multiple films. Stiller has been acknowledged as the leader of the group due to his multiple cameos and for his consistent use of the other members in roles in films which he produces and directs. He has appeared the most with Owen Wilson, in nine films; the two are set to co-star in Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, scheduled for 2009. Of the 34 primary films that are considered Frat Pack movies, Stiller has been involved with 20, in some capacity.
Update: looks like the text above is taken verbatum from Ben Stiller's Wikipedia article, accoring to the entry's author, Nehrams2020.
Jack Black Urges Votes for Choice, Obama
by Kevin Crossman
Here's another celeb-heavy "get out the vote" video, though besides Jack Black the starpower is a little light. This one has both a pro-choice as well as pro-Obama slant. Jack's Year One director Harold Ramis also appears.

Will Ferrell's Halloween Prank at USC
by Kevin Crossman
Will Ferrell "Captain Compete" visited his alma matter USC to save a falling man from sure death and to lighten the mood at football practice. Hilarious stuff well worth a view (LA Times Blog).
Fanboys Poster Looks... Familiar
by Kevin Crossman
Seems appropriate that The Weinstein Company unveiled the new (final?) poster for the oft-delayed Fanboys today. After all, who doesn't think that's Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer the 40 year-old virgin underneath the Vader helment?
The movie is now set for release in February and recent chatter indicates the final cut will be a mix of the original version (with cancer storyline) along with Apatow Productions cameo-heavy reshoots. The film stars Dan Fogler, Jay Baruchel and Kristen Bell and features cameos from Seth Rogen (in dual roles) and others.
Porno Movie In Theatres Everywhere
by Kevin Crossman
Look what the delivery man brought today (no, not cream). Kevin Smith's latest film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno hits theatres today, starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks. The film features an interesting mix of Smith regulars (Jason Mewes, Jeff Anderson) with actors from Team Apatow (Craig Robinson, Justin Long, Gerry Bednob).
The film is tracking very well for a Kevin Smith film, likely Smith's highest opening ever. According to tracking data, Zack and Miri is 66% awareness, 33% definite, and 13% first choice of moviegoers this weekend. Look for an opening between $15-20 million.
Check out these interviews with Manny the Movie Guy. I'm posting these for a couple reasons. First, Manny sent me a note so I thought I'd return the favor. But as an added bonus, watch Rogen and Banks try to keep it together during some of Manny's more outrageous questions.
Stars Still Want You to Vote
by Kevin Crossman
Here's another great PSA urging people to get out and vote on November 4th. This video features a ton of A-list celebs, including Steven Spielberg who directed and Leonardo DiCaprio who produced.
Frat Pack fans will notices many familiar faces, including Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen (hilarious as "Borat"), Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, Jennifer Aniston, Snoop Dogg, and Tom Cruise.

Pineapple Express DVD - January 6
by Kevin Crossman
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced January 6, 2009 release of 1-disc rated, 1-disc unrated, 2-disc unrated, and 2-disc Blu-ray editions of Pineapple Express starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Danny McBride.
The only extra material on the 1-disc releases will be a Filmmaker and Cast Commentary, deleted and extended scenes, and a gag reel. The 2-disc releases will include all that, along with rehearsal footage, the first table read, featurettes (Joe Lo Truglio's Art of the Social Butterfly, Jonah Hill on Set, Stuntmaster Ken Jeong, Injury Report, Red and Stormy's Guide to Marriage), raw footage, and more.

Madagascar Escape 2 Africa Premiere Photos
by Kevin Crossman
Thanks to tipster Laura for these cool photos of Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor at the Los Angeles premiere of Madagascar 2. The animated sequel opens on November 7th.

Amy Poehler and Will Arnett Welcome Baby Boy
by Kevin Crossman
Congrats to Amy Poehler and husband Will Arnett on the birth of their baby boy, Archie yesterday. The couple's publicist Lewis Kay said "He is 8 lbs. 1 oz.. Amy, Will and Archie are all healthy and resting comfortably."

Poehler missed her Weekend Update anchor gig on SNL yesterday, naturally. Seth Meyers broke the news and called it the top news story of the day. Later, Keenan Thompson and returning cast member Maya Rudolf sang a modified version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" ("We love you... Amy!). Poehler is not expected to return to SNL after maternity leave, meaning her Palin Rap from last week will be her memorable swan song from the show. She appeared briefly in a filmed segment alongside yesterday's host Jon Hamm, however.
Will Ferrell Returns to SNL as George Bush
by Kevin Crossman
Will Ferrell has dusted off his George W. Bush impersonation in advance of his 2009 Broadway production, appearing on tonight's SNL Weekend Update show. And even though it's been a couple years since Ferrell has performed as "W", he's still as hilarious as ever. In addition to the opening sketch, Ferrell also appeared under the end-credits in street clothes wearing a sweatshirt of his alma matter, USC.

Zack and Miri Tapping Into Rogen's Core Audience?
by Rick Duran
Two weeks to release, Zack and Miri is tracking 53% awareness, 34% definite and 5% first choice. As a comparison, two weeks before opening Pineapple Express was tracking at 47% awareness, 37% definite interest and 5% first choice. Not expecting a Pineapple-sized opening ($40 million), but it does look like Rogen has established a consistent audience.
In other Zack and Miri news, a new trailer has launched (very similar to the older trailer) and the premiere was held in Hollywood a few days ago.
Stars Elizabeth Banks and a svelte Seth Rogen with Director Kevin Smith

Thanks to tipsters Jon and Laura.
Mammary Promo Push for Role Models
by Kevin Crossman
Of course, we're eagerly awaiting the release of Role Models starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott on November 7th. In the meantime the fine folks from the film's official website have come up with an amusing distraction: The Mammary Game.
Pretty simple stuff, as this is just a titillating version of the classic game of concentration. There are two versions of the game: one with PG rated mammaries and another that is R rated. You can choose whichever turns you on.
In addition to Rudd and Scott, Role Models also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jane Lynch, and Elizabeth Banks. We found this promo photo of Banks to be especially amusing. Look for more promo photos later this week.

New Marley and Me Trailer Impresses
by Kevin Crossman
Now this is what we've been wanting to see! The full trailer for Marley and Me was released. Both Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston look to be in great form doing their thing. Moreover, this trailer gives those of us who haven't read the book an idea of what the movie is all about: couple purchases dog, hijinks ensue. The movie opens on Christmas Day.
Will Ferrell Heading to Broadway as Bush
by Kevin Crossman
Will Ferrell will make his Broadway debut in January in the new solo comedy "You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush." Ferrell's frequent writing collaborator Adam McKay is on board to write and produce the production that presumably will be topical and very political. Of course, Ferrell played Bush for several years on SNL and his portrayal is still considered the seminal version from the popular late-night laffer.

Production begins previews Inauguration Day, January 20th, with a formal opening on February 1st opening at the Cort Theater. Limited engagement is scheduled to close on March 15th.
Steve Carell Tapped for Historical Comedy
by Rick Duran
Steve Carell is attached to play the title character in The Adventures of Brigadier Gerard, a comedy set during the Napoleonic Wars that Media Rights Capital is mobilizing for a spring 2009 production start. The film was written by John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky (Blades of Glory) and Mike Judge (Idiocracy) will Exec. Produce. The film is one of several films Carell is considering according to Variety, including Date Night with Tina Fey.
Carell will play the title character, "the bravest soldier in Napoleon’s army and also the dumbest. Gerard follows Napoleon from his rise to power to his permanent exile. The comedy is based on stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."
Ben Stiller had to back away from playing Greg Focker (Heartbreak Kid), Ferrell needed to lay off Ron Burgundy (Semi-Pro), and Carell needs to not play Michael Scott in every movie.
From the Blades writers, this might be pretty good, especially if Mike Judge is somehow overlooking it. Hopefully it'll have a good cast, bring the funny and disprove any doubts. But Carell is milking the bumbling idiot schtick too much for my liking right now. This pretty much sounds like Get Le Smart.
Ladies Set for Couples Retreat
by Kevin Crossman
Big casting news for Vince Vaughn's next comedy, Couples Retreat. We'd heard Vince was paired with buddies Jon Favreau and Jason Bateman in a film directed by pal Peter Billingsley. Now comes word of the ladies who'll join the gents.

Couples Retreat will be shooting in Los Angeles and Bora Bora according to the story in The Hollywood Reporter.
Get Some Thunder on November 18th
by Kevin Crossman
The image pretty much says it all - Tropic Thunder DVD on November 18, including BluRay and two-disc unrated director's cut.
As editor Rick Duran noted in our forums, not sure where they're getting that "#1 Comedy of the Year!" business, since Get Smart made more domestically and worldwide.
Tim Robbins Honored with Hollywood Star
by Kevin Crossman
Academy Award winner Tim Robbins kept the mood light when he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday. Robbins, 49, is known for his proclivity for bold roles. He has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Mystic River, The Shawshank Redemption, Jacob's Ladder and The Player. He is more familiar to Frat Pack fans with roles in movies like Anchorman.
"I used to take the bus from here to Burbank to go to work," he recalled. "When the bus was late, I would walk up and down and throw my cigarettes down. Now I have the honor of having this done to my star."
Jack Black has worked with Robbins extensively, including Robbins' hilariously creepy cameo in Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. Playing off the difference in stature, Black said "I literally looked up to him. I actually became his stalker because I wanted to be part of his world."

Seth Rogen Has Cancer?
by Kevin Crossman
White-hot Seth Rogen is lining up films roles a plenty. This week, we learned that Mandate Pictures has picked up I'm With Cancer, a comedic autobiographical spec written by Will Reiser that Rogen will produce with his writing/producing partner Evan Goldberg and Ben Karlin ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"). Rogen also will have a supporting role in the film as well. Mandate is still looking for a director, but sounds like this project may come together quickly.
Meanwhile, Rogen's next movie is the highly anticipated Zack and Miri Make a Porno, coming to theatres on October 31st. To learn more about the movie-making process, be sure to check out Money Shots with director Kevin Smith on the film's official website.
Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor at Gala
by Amy Gilbert
Ben Stiller and his wife Christine Taylor attend the Project A.L.S. 11th Annual "Tomorrow is Tonight" Gala at The Waldorf Astoria in New York City on October 7th. The benefit raises money and awareness for Lou Gehrig's Disease patients and researchers.
Update: looks like Ben was the host for this event.

Steve Carell Inks First Look Deal with Warner Brothers
by Kevin Crossman
Variety is reporting that Steve Carell has been signed to a three year first-look contract with Warner Brothers. Under a new production company named Carousel Productions, Carell will work with Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock to oversee new projects and may produce when he isn't starring.
"My idea was to partner with friends of mine, people I trusted, with whom I share a certain sensibility," Carell told Daily Variety. "I have some ideas for films, but I've gotten to know so many people who are funny, talented and fertile with ideas that I'm confident this very strong base of friendships will lead to projects."
Though it isn't part of the deal, Warner is also said to be working on a Get Smart sequel. Carell's next movie is Date Night starring Tina Fey and directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum).

Rudd Earns Praise from Spy Reviewer - New Role Models Clips
by Rick Duran
AICN has a mostly positive test review of Paul Rudd and Jason Segel in I Love You, Man. Contains spoilers.
Reviewer has high praise for Paul Rudd and Jon Favreau, very little to say about Jason Segel or the rest of the cast. Most criticism is reserved for director John Hamburg of Along Came Polly fame.
But if this review is any indicator, this could be a very good vehicle for Rudd.
Meanwhile, we're gearing up for Paul Rudd's next starring vehicle, Role Models, opposite Seann William Scott, Jane Lynch, and Elizabeth Banks. That film opens on November 7th and two new clips recently premiered online.

Seth Rogen Hunger Strike: Day 95
by Kevin Crossman
Okay, Seth Rogen isn't really on a hunger strike (at least none that we know of). Instead, speculation is riding high that the famously pudgy comedian is shaping up to star in The Green Hornet alongside Stephen Chow as Kato (Chow is also directing).

Of course, Rogen had the action comedy thing going well this summer in Pineapple Express and also following in the steps as a cop in Superbad might actually have the stuff to front an actual action picture (with presumed light comedic elements). We'll see when The Green Hornet is released in summer 2010 (expect massive preview footage at ComicCon this year).
In related martial-arts news, it was announced this week that Jack Black will be returning in a sequel to Kung Fu Panda, alonside Angelina Jolie and "other members of the voice cast" (Seth Rogen anyone?). The sequel will debut in 3D on June 3, 2011.
Frat Pack Friends Don't Want You To Vote
by Kevin Crossman
A ton of celebrities appear in this video urging to you not vote. Among luminaries such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen DeGeneris, and others, several Frat Pack friends appear. Familiar faces include Jennifer Aniston, Amy Adams, Sarah Silverman, Natalie Portman, Tobey McGuire and Dustin Hoffman.
The video is NSFW thanks to some profanity, most of which is delivered by Jonah Hill.
Kristen Wiig Cameo and Raucous Commentary Highlight Forgetting Sarah Marshall DVD
by Kevin Crossman
Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a well-reviewed box office hit earlier this year and the DVD hits stores this Tuesday. A single disc version is available but every fan will want to pick up the Unrated Collectors Edition.
The extended version of the movie restores seven minutes of footage, most of which is a funny but ultimately unnecessary scene with Kristen Wiig as a yoga instructor. Many fans of Wiig (Knocked Up, Walk Hard) were looking forward to this scene and were disappointed when it was cut from the theatrical version. Thankfully, fans will be satisfied by the inclusion in the extended version on home video. Even better, the additional footage in Forgetting Sarah Marshall does not make the film feel considerably longer, as it did in The 40 Year-Old Virgin, nor does this version omit footage from theatres as did Apatow's production of Talladega Nights.

The Architect of the Frat Pack Insists There is no Frat Pack
by Rick Duran
Warning: Long-winded rant below.
While promoting Tropic Thunder in the UK, Ben Stiller proclaimed his dislike of the Frat Pack name and categorization on the British radio station, Heart FM:
"It's such a weird thing that people come up with a name that doesn't really exist and why does everything have to rhyme all the time? If it rhymes does it make it real? Is that it? They don't do it for other things. They don't have the Women Schwimmin do they? I think the whole thing about the Frat Pack group is completely fabricated anyway. The group doesn't exist but it rhymes, at least there's that, so it must be true right?"
This echoes comments last week courtesy of Will Ferrell, saying talk of the Frat Pack is "thankfully almost dead." It's never been a secret that they all hated the name (So do I, actually.) In my personal opinion, despite the name being a tribute to one of this decade's greatest comedies (Old School), it undermined the actual group. A minor gripe of course (Sinatra and Martin weren't literally Rats either), but still, I can understand why guys like Stiler and Ferrell would hate it.
But as far as the group never existing? Um, wasn't it Stiller himself who initially cast Jack Black and Owen Wilson in Tropic Thunder? Not to mention his producing Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell and arranging a cameo by Luke Wilson (clearly there were better, non-Pack related faces who could've brought more to that scene.) And is it just a coincidence that in 2 years, a newcomer like Danny McBride has co-starred with Stiller, Ferrell, Owen Wilson and (clearly related to the Frat Pack) Seth Rogen? It's not a coincidence for him to be accepted by that group of actors specifically, but not guys like Adam Sandler, Mike Myers or Jim Carrey.
A group of six or seven actors who bounce around town chasing ass? Nope, it was never that. A network of actors intertwined by shared co-stars, directors, producers and managers? Absolutely. The connect-the-dots common factors in all these films is a very calculated gimmick. One they've all furthered their careers from.
True, it's not 2004 anymore and pairings like the Starsky & Hutch cast (Stiller, Wilson, Vaughn, Ferrell) won't happen. In that sense, yes, the Pack is over. But talk of Anchorman 2, pairings like Step Brothers, ensemble casts like Tropic Thunder and Night at the Museum show that guys like Stiller and Ferrell are still employing the successful formula of the theorhetical "Pack." And that is why fans still show up; we recognize this successful brand because of all the familiar faces. Spare us the whining, show us the funny, and we'll keep buying tickets/DVDs.
DVD Release Round-Up
by Kevin Crossman
I guess we were remiss in reminding everyone that Danny McBride's The Foot Fist Way hit DVD stores this week. The DVD includes:
Meanwhile, another recent film with a limited release is coming to DVD on November 4th. Luke Wilson's Henry Poole is Here received fairly good notices but obviously a lot more people will be able to check out the movie on DVD. Here are the details.

Lastly, I guess some people might have been ambivalent about our summer box office tracking. But, when a movie like Evan Almighty or this summer's Step Brothers just barely crosses the finish line above rather than below $100 million you can see what a difference that makes for the marketing.

Frat Pack's International Promo Push
by Kevin Crossman
We're based here in the good ol' USA so we sometimes forget that few films are released globally simultaneously. Nonetheless, we're pleased to report on some recent promotional pushes for films that are new to those of you beyond our shore.
Tom Crooze? No, It's Ben Stiller

Ben appeared to promote Tropic Thunder at the 56th San Sebastian Film Festival in San Sebastian, northern Spain, Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008. The San Sebastian Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious in the Spanish speaking World, opens today with a strong focus on European and U.S. movies.
John C. McEnroe? No, it's John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell

Context from our Australian correspondent Karen Pok: The other guest on that night's show was a guy that won Australia's first ever pole vaulting medal at the Olympics. Hence the official Australian uniform, pole vaulting pole and gold medal.
Vince Vaughn Stars with Favreau and Bateman in Couples Retreat
by Kevin Crossman
It's been a while, a long while, since Vince Vaughn has announced any projects. Four Christmases has been wrapped for some time, so honestly we were getting a little worried about his next project. Well, worry no more because Vince's next movie sounds great!
Vince Vaughn will star in Couples Retreat, a comedy directed by Vince's pal Peter Billingsley (The Break-Up) and written by Jon Favreau. Favreau will also costar in the movie along with Jason Bateman and Faizon Love (Elf's exasperated Gimbel's store manager). The movie follows four couples who go to a tropical island resort. While one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to play but soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional.
According to Variety, Vince came up with the idea for the movie, similar to The Break-Up's genesis. Billingsley has produced several films under Vaughn's Wild West Picture Show productions but has also been doing second unit directing. This is Billingsley's first full-length directing gig.
The movie is expected to start shooting in Bora Bora and Los Angeles in late October.
Thanks to Rick Duran for the tip.
New Projects in the Works for Owen and Luke Wilson
by Kevin Crossman
Luke Wilson will star with Giovanni Ribisi in a film about the birth of the online porn industry. According to Variety, the indie-film Middle Men "centers on a straight-and-narrow businessman who builds the first online billing company dealing exclusively with adult entertainment and finds himself in the middle of a whirlwind filled with starlets, conmen, Russian mobsters, federal agents and international terrorists -- all while trying to hold on to his marriage and family."
Middle Men will begin filming in late October in Phoenix.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that Owen Wilson will return to the genre he's best known for. Blood Brothers is a buddy comedy with a twist. The film has a vampire element, though it is unclear if both leads are vampire or not. Owen is rumored to be coming on in a producer role, so he's likely to exert much control over which role he'll take.
According to CinemaBlend, the synopsis of the film is:
In this buddy comedy two of the last vampires on earth, who have been friends for over a thousand years and have experienced all of recorded history together, are now living in Miami. An antiquities collector is trying to summon the forces of evil so he can rule the world and the only thing that can stop him are our reluctant vampires who have grown a bit tired of eternal life.
Owen has the pale look that's requisite to play a vampire. And we know he's been hanging out in Miami with almost-brother Woody Harrelson. So, it'll be interesting to see where this project goes.
Role Models Red-band Trailer Debuts
by Rick Duran
Following the trailer debuts of Four Christmases and Zack and Miri, today brings our first look at the red-band trailer for the Paul Rudd/Seann William Scott comedy Role Models. The original trailer brought some good laughs despite a seemingly family-friendly tone. Well, this new version certainly brings the funny and tells you to leave the family at home for this one. Great laughs throughout from co-stars Jane Lynch, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and especially Bobb'e J Thompson. Enjoy the NSFW goodness below:

Tropic Thunder and Step Brothers Cross $100 Million Line
by Kevin Crossman
Tropic Thunder and Step Brothers both crossed $100 million in grosses over the weekend, cementing their blockbuster status.
Tropic grossed an estimated $4.1 million for a $103 million North American total. Tropic becomes Ben Stiller's sixth live-action $100 million picture, and first as a director. It also becomes Jack Black's second live-action movie at this threshold (after King Kong).
Step Brothers grossed $400,000 this weekend to eek past the $100 million barrier. This is Will Ferrell's fourth movie at this level.
Four Christmases Trailer Debuts
by Kevin Crossman
The trailer for Vince Vaughn's holiday release Four Christmases is now available and I gotta say this looks like a fun movie. Vince and Reese seem to have that "Break-Up" couple thing down pat and we get a great look at some of the crazy family members the couple must deal with in the movie.
Lots of familar faces, including Jon Favreau who looks ripped like an athlete as Vaughn's UFC-fighting brother (that's Tim McGraw as the other brother). We also get glimpses to some of the parents, including Mary Steenburgen (as Reese's mother), Robert Duvall (as Vince's dad), Jon Voight (Reese's dad) and Sissy Spacek (Vince's mom). We also see Vince's pal Peter Billingsley (The Break-Up, Elf) playing another suffering sad-sack - this time as an airline counter attendant. Kristin Chenoweth (Bewitched) plays Witherspoon's sister.
Most surprising is what looks like a plum role for Swingers' Patrick Van Horn, who has been basically lost in Hollywood since 1998's Free Enterprise. He plays Vince's best friend who is now sleeping with his mother. Van Horn's return is long overdue!
With an all-star cast and a more edgy PG-13 Vince in the house, we hope Four Christmases will resonate with audiences better than Vince's last holiday film, Fred Claus.
New Zack and Miri Poster
by Kevin Crossman
We told you about how the original poster for Zack and Miri Make a Porno was banned by the MPAA. Well, this is Kevin Smith's response.

This is brilliant, in that it promotes the "porn" aspects of the movie much more than the original. Good job MPAA.

Holiday Posters A Study in Contrast
by Kevin Crossman
There are two big holiday releases featuring Frat Pack star paired with familiar costars, and their respective posters have been recently released. One's great and one's... not.
Four Christmases stars Vince Vaughn along with Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson's Legally Blonde costar (Reese also appeared with Paul Rudd and Christine Taylor in the overlooked and not completely horrible Overnight Delivery). The poster plays off the obvious height difference and says "this is a cute Christmas comedy, not all dark and strange like Fred Claus was."

Probably more anticipated in Fratville is Marley and Me, featuring Owen Wilson (in his first role in some time...) along with everyone's favorite sorority sister Jennifer Aniston (The Break-Up, Along Came Polly, Bruce Almighty).
We've already said we hate the awful teaser trailer featuring Chariots of Fire music and such a brief mention of Owen and Jen that some audiences members didn't even realize they were in the movie. We've got a couple big stars here, shouldn't we be playing them up?
Apparently not. Sigh...

Heel the love? Oh, brother...
Jonah Hill Acts Like... Jonah Hill with Britney Spears
by Kevin Crossman
Here's video of Jonah Hill trying to "help" Britney Spears from the MTV Video Music Awards last night.
Soccer, NASCAR, Basketball... Tennis?
by Kevin Crossman
Will Ferrell delighted the crowd at Flushing Meadows while attending the U.S. Open tennis tournament. According to the New York Times:
Will Ferrell seemed to feel the power Sunday, when he was shown on the scoreboard imitating Andy Murray’s arm curl.
Murray had just scampered to another short Rafael Nadal shot in the fourth set, flicking a backhand winner and spinning around to finish and hold his serve in dramatic fashion. Murray was so relaxed on the changeover, he was delighted at the sight of Ferrell, his favorite actor, hamming it up for the crowd.
“He made me laugh,” Murray said.
Russell Brand's Big Moment
by Kevin Crossman
A reminder that Forgetting Sarah Marshall scene-stealer Russell Brand is hosting the MTV Video Music Awards tonight.
Brand's next project is a sequel of sorts, where his Sarah Marshall character Aldous Snow is back on booze and drugs but must be transported to the Greek Theatre for show. Get Him to the Greek costars Jonah Hill as an insurance adjuster who's job it is to transport Snow to the show.
Filming for Get Him to the Greek is underway, under the direction of Forgetting Sarah Marshall writer-director Nicholas Stoller. While principal photography is set to start in early 2009, these shots were uncovered on a Flickr site and presumably were taken as part of montage footage to update audiences on how the previously sober Snow has fallen off the wagon. This looks outrageous, and very very funny.

Ghostbusters Sequel Moves Forward; Ramis Discusses Apatow Rumors
by Rick Duran
Early this summer, a story leaked online that a Ghostbusters sequel was being made with the Team Apatow crew taking over. Of course, this sounded riduclous and impossible. We laughed with Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd as they dismissed the story as pure rumor. So it was a bit alarming this week when Variety reported that Columbia Pictures greenlit a third Ghostbuster script, and will negotiate with the original cast after a screenplay is written.
Why is that news relevant here at the Frat Pack Tribute? The new film will be written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupinsky, writers/producers on The Office and writers of next June's Jack Black/Michael Cera comedy Year One, produced by Judd Apatow and directed by original Ghostbuster and Knocked-Up costar Harold Ramis.

Ramis wrote to the Chicago Tribune this week, discussing how Team Apatow might be involved with the Ghostbusters project:
"yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. not much else to say at this point. everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we'll take it from there.
best,
harold
The MPAA Blows
by Kevin Crossman
Well, actually they don't blow. You see, it seems the MPAA has decided that this poster is inappropriate for audiences in America. You can have sadistic images on the horror-movie-of-the-week but this really nicely laid out and designed poster is a no go. It just says "porno" it doesn't mean it is a porno! The color scheme on this one-sheet is great. And, yes, we understand there's a certain... implication. But, come on! This is fairly innocuous, isn't it? (Entertainment Weekly)

Zack and Miri is playing at the Toronto International Film Festival and is set of to open nationwide on October 31st.
Criterion Collection Edition of Bottle Rocket Coming in November
by Amy Gilbert
The Bottle Rocket Criterion Collection two-disc set will be available in November. You can Pre-order it now.
Synopsis
Wes Anderson first illustrated his lovingly detailed, slightly surreal cinematic vision in this witty and warm portrait of three young middle-class misfits. Fresh out of a mental hospital, gentle Anthony (Luke Wilson) finds himself once again embroiled in the machinations of his best friend, elaborate schemer Dignan (Owen Wilson). With the aid of getaway driver Bob (Robert Musgrave), they develop a needlessly complex, mildly successful plan to rob a small bookstore—then go “on the lam.” Also featuring Lumi Cavazos as Inez, the South American housekeeper Anthony falls in love with, and James Caan as local thief extraordinaire Mr. Henry, Bottle Rocket is a charming, hilarious, affectionate look at the folly of dreamers. Shot against radiant southwestern backdrops, it’s the film that put Anderson and the Wilson brothers on the map.

Tropic Thunder #1 for Third Week; John C. Reilly's Big Week
by Kevin Crossman
Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder was number one at the box office for a third week, tyingThe Dark Knight for most weeks at number one this summer joining The Dark Knight as the only films to be number one for three weeks this summer (The Dark Knight topped the charts for four weeks). The film drew $14.6 million over the four day holiday weekend, with a cumulative total of $87 million to date. Expect the movie satire to finish north of $100 million. Pineapple Express has crossed the $80 million mark with a $4+ million weekend.
Step Brothers spent one last week in the Top 20, pulling in $1.6 million to get to $98 million total. But better news comes from the United Kingdom, where Step Brothers opened at number one with £1.7 million. That's great news for Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly who have been doing a lot of press abroad.

Meanwhile, let's do another "promotion" for another John C. Reilly laugher filled with conflict. The Promotion came and went in June after a long delay getting to theatres (it was filmed before Walk Hard). And it arrives on DVD today. So, go on out there and support John C. Reilly, Seann William Scott, Jenna Fischer and others by checking out The Promotion today.

Consider this a down-payment on what is expected to be an excellent home video release. If you've enjoyed the segments from the faux-umentary Rain of Madness you'll love the full 30 minute version that is now available for free on iTunes. This is great stuff for all Tropic Thunder fans.

New Step Brothers Poster
by Kevin Crossman
Check out this cool new one-sheet for Step Brothers, courtesy our Dutch tipster Mike. The popular comedy is going international this fall, with a host of release dates in September and October. Will Ferrell's movies haven't done very well overseas, but maybe Step Brothers will break the trend. There is also an official international site for Step Brothers.
Box Office Update
by Kevin Crossman
Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder held up very well in it's second weekend, down only 38% for a $16.1 million weekend, according to estimates. That's good for first place, beating newcomers The House Bunny and Death Race. Anything less than 40% is considered a good "hold" for a second weekend, putting the long-term prospects for Tropic Thunder's overall box office in a better light. So far, the movie has made almost $66 million.
Pineapple Express and Step Brothers continued at the box office as well, grossing $5.6 and $2.3 million respectively. The Seth Rogen/James Franco stoner comedy has taken in $74 million in three weeks, while the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly laugher now is at $95.5 million after five weeks.
Rainn Wilson's The Rocker was nearly booed off the stage. It opened out of the top ten and has grossed only $3.8 million since opening on Wednesday.
Land of the Lost Preview

Matthew McConaughey Blogs About Tropic Thunder Role
by Kevin Crossman
This is from the M.M. Journal section of the official www.matthewmcconaughey.com website. While I don't think McConaughey was the best part of Tropic Thunder, and I do think Owen Wilson would have done a better job in the role, I gotta say I like what McConaughey has to say in this post.
Hey all, I went to tropic thunder premiere last Tuesday night....All of the cast was there...really funny movie....there are surprises all over this film and just when you think you know where the movie's goin, another surprise entrance by some character or plot twist surprises you....what a cast of characters..you will see actors you like doing things you've never seen them do before...Stiller did a top job directing too...the movie knows what it is and keeps delivering....there's a lot of protests surrounding the pic, but if you see it, I think you'll agree that all the "touchy" humor is in context, and in no way mean spirited or irresponsible...its just funny....i hope you enjoy yhe film...i had a blast steppin in to work on this project for just a few days...its another "brand" of comedy and a comedy team (Stiller and gang) that I wanted to play with, and am happy I did....never lose your sense of humor, and just keep livin, mcconaughey
Night at the Museum 2 Set Photos - Spoilers Ahead!
by Kevin Crossman
Check out these neat photos of Ben Stiller and Amy Adams on the set of Night at the Museum 2: Battle for the Smithsonian. These come from our Dutch tipster Mike and found on TheBadandUgly.com.
There's a lot to like in these photos, and some spoilers too (especially if your name is Carla Gugino). In addition to some great shots of Amy Adams in the high-profile role of historical figure Amelia Earheart, there are familiar characters from the first Night at the Museum, including the cavemen, Ghengis Kahn, and Pocahontas.
And those spoilers? Well, maybe they're not that "spoily" if you've kind of caught our drift or put two and two together, so to speak. But, if you really, really don't want to know who Ben Stiller is romancing in this movie, don't follow the link...

Screw Summer! Anticipated Fall Releases
by Rick Duran
Time to talk about the last four months of 2008. We've got two films starring Frat Pack members (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson) and two from Judd's boys (Seth and Paul) among the high profile releases. We've also got Stiller doing his Lion schtick in Madagascar 2 for the kids.
I was on the fence about including Nick & Norah (Cera, Dennings, Baruchel), but my rule of thumb was "Has Kev Blogged About it? Then It's In." Plus... I included Madagascar, so why not?
Will it be a blowout for Vince? Will Seth + Porno + Halloween be this fall's big money shot?
Which is your most anticipated Frat Pack / Team Apatow-related Fall Movie? Take the Poll.
FunnyOrDie Video Features Kightlinger and Harris
by Kevin Crossman
I think I might be the only person in the world who loves Will Ferrell's Kicking & Screaming. Sure his 2005 family soccer comedy is a flawed movie. Deeply, deeply flawed. But you know there isn't a week that goes by that I don't think about the situations (Starbucks line, anyone?) quotes ("I'm like a tornado of anger!"), or characters (Byong Sun!).
One of the highlights of Kicking & Screaming is the lesbian couple played by Laura Kightlinger and Rachael Harris. Both have Frat Pack relations. Harris had a small part in Starsky & Hutch, while Kightlinger was Jack Black's main squeeze for many years. So, the latest video from Will Ferrell's video site, FunnyOrDie, definitely struck a nerve. And, uh, let's just say that I think Harris is pretty sexy. Fans of Showtime's Weeds are familiar with the video's star, Hunter Parrish.
Frat Pack Tribute Review: Tropic Thunder (
)
by Drew Hunt
Before the credits even hit the screen, Tropic Thunder is already skewing mainstream Hollywood culture. As the faux-commercial for the energy drink Booty Sweat ended, my fellow audience members vocalized their bewilderment: “What was that? Was that a commercial?”, “That wasn’t real, was it?”, “No, I’m pretty sure I’ve had Booty Sweat before”, “No, that was fake. Wasn’t it?”, “I dunno, it looked pretty real”, “I’m confused…”
And with that, writer/producer/director/star Ben Stiller’s bitingly satirical romp was in full force. Straight out of the gate, Tropic Thunder is a pure comedic thrill ride.
Tropic Thunder is Weekend Winner
by Kevin Crossman
Though the results were perhaps a bit less than expected, overall this is good news for Ben Stiller and company. The film was number one at the box office this weekend, finally ending Dark Knight's reign. Tropic took an estimated $26 million this weekend, and a total of $37 million since opening Wednesday.
Tropic's first five days are comparable to Pineapple Express, which opened to a larger Wednesday opening day gross but less over the entire weekend. But Tropic seems to have affected the second weekend gross, which dropped nearly 60% for a $10 million weekend and about $63 million total.
Step Brothers dropped only 45% in it's fourth weekend for another $5 million and a new running total of $90 million. Luke Wilson's latest indie release Henry Poole is Here opened weakly with $800,000 in 527 theatres.

Tropic Thunder Is Amazing (
)
by Kevin Crossman
This isn't a full review but I will say that Tropic Thunder is (almost) everything we hoped it would be. First off, it is a true "Ben Stiller movie" much in line with his past projects. In fact, there are number of parallels to Zoolander, including some of those fun celebrity cameos. Which, unfortunately, is the one tiny problem with Tropic Thunder: no Owen Wilson. While Matthew McConaughey is servicable in a role written for Wilson, it is clear how Owen would have played the role and how much better he would have been.
Nontheless, Tropic Thunder is really funny stuff, especially the "big actor" cameo. Jack Black has some really funny stuff too, but his role isn't much bigger than Jay Baruchel or Brandon Jackson's - he's headliner only because he's "Jack Black - movie star."

Robert Downey Jr. is the co-lead here, and he's great. And given that Downey apparently stayed in character even when cameras weren't rolling it seems the satire of method acting is a fine line indeed. There's actually real emotion in the relationship between Downey and Stiller's characters. While Stiller's "Speedman" character has a lot of similarities to Der-ek-Zoo-Lan-der, this isn't a retread. Tropic Thunder is a tour-de-force for Ben as the movie plays well as a farce, a satire, and a very serviceable action picture. Lots of fun!
5 Beer Mugs! Frat Pack Classic.
(there are a couple cool cameos that I won't spoil...)
Steve Carell to Costar with Tina Fey in RomCom
by Rick Duran
If you asked me what two stars would be perfect for a romantic comedy, this is the combination I'd suggest.

According to Variety, Steve Carell and Tina Fey are set to costar as a married couple in a romantic comedy from director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum). Date Night centers on a couple who find their routine date night becomes much more than just dinner and a movie. Film is set to film in early 2009, after Levy finishes Night at the Museum 2 and during filming hiatus' for Carell and Fey's TV shows.
"I wanted to do a relatable, grounded character comedy about marriage and the lengths we go to preserve the spark," Levy told Daily Variety. "Tina and Steve are smart and relatable, and the tone of their comedy perfectly fits this film."
Tropic Thunder Is Here!
by Kevin Crossman
We've been waiting with incredibly high anticipation for this one for over a year and today we can see Tropic Thunder in theatres everywhere. The action comedy stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr.
Tropic Thunder in South Park by Karen Pok

Of course, any film starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black will be of interest. But considering this film is written and directed by Ben and costars a host of A-list celebs and Frat Pack friends, our interest level is through the roof. Of course, we view this with a large degree of melancholy, since Owen Wilson was unable to film his cameo (replaced by Matthew McConaughey).

Despite the protests by advocates for those with mental disabilities, the film is getting fairly good buzz, especially by those who appreciate the storyline that skewers the Hollywood elite. This is sort of a return to form for Ben Stiller, who made a name for himself satiring pop culture with The Ben Stiller Show, and for the next ten years made a regular habit of staying in the satire genre with projects like Reality Bites, Mystery Men, The Cable Guy, Heat Vision and Jack, and Zoolander. So after a long run of popular maintstream comedy farces, it is nice to see Ben return to his roots.

Starsky & Hutch Basic Cable Debut and DVD Giveaway
by Kevin Crossman
Remember back to 2004 when it seemed like the Frat Pack stars were popping up in places that you'd least expect them? Oh, we remember those times fondly, even as 2008 has sort of brought that vibe back a little thanks to a cool cameo in Step Brothers and all sorts of stunt-cameos in Tropic Thunder.
Nonetheless, 2004 was really the "it" year for Frat Pack cameos, perhaps most superbly shown in Todd Phillips' Starsky & Hutch. Nominally a Ben Stiller / Owen Wilson buddy comedy, the film also featured Vince Vaughn in a juicy role as the film's chief villian. Old School alumni Juliette Lewis, Snoop Dogg, and Matt Walsh also appear.
But the highlights of Starsky for me was the hilarious scene featuring "Big Earl" (Will Ferrell) being interrogated by Starsky and Hutch. Ferrell really brought the funny in this scene and Stiller and Wilson played off him perfectly. Of course, Will had great cameos in Wedding Crashers, Boat Trip, and The Wendell Baker Story too, but even though Chazz Reingold has his fans ("Ma! The Meatloaf!") I think I still prefer Big Earl.
While it is true that most Frat Pack fans have seen this cinematic gem already, it is still kind of cool to see this classic scene on basic cable. And thanks to AMC you can tune in to Starsky & Hutch this week.

Tropic Thunder EW Cover Story: A 'Delicious Guava Nectar'
by Rick Duran
The
boys of Tropic Thunder are hamming it up on the latest cover of EW. The issue
features a great interview with Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey
Jr. Here's a sample exchange between the guys:
ROBERT DOWNEY JR.: I have been so wantonly, flagrantly humiliated [in my personal life] that anything that could happen as a result of a movie doesn't even register.
BEN STILLER: [To Downey] Does that give you more fearlessness working — because you're just, like, Who gives a s---?
DOWNEY: It's pretty effective.
JACK BLACK: Look, humiliation hurts. So on the one hand, you have the pain of humiliation. But on the other, you have the delicious guava nectar of laughter. You have to balance it out: How much of this are you willing to endure to get that? Certain people have that thing where they need that guava so badly they'd do anything for it.
DOWNEY: Ben? Humiliation?
STILLER: Yeah, it's definitely been a part of my career. We've all gone for that guava. But I don't know if anybody has a high tolerance for it personally or enjoys it.
DOWNEY: [Shrugs] I do. I like it.
You can find the full
interview on EW.com or newsstands now. EW.com's coverage of the story
features some great outtakes from the cover's photoshoot.

Tropic
Thunder News: Simple Jack Site Yanked, Cast Visits the Troops
by Rick Duran
Tropic Thunder has finally caused controversy, but not for the
reason you'd expect. Dreamworks
has pulled simplejackmovie.com off the web, the promo site for Simple
Jack, a fictional film in Tropic that Ben Stiller's character
Tugg Speedman had starred in. The concept, in which Speedman played
a mentally handicapped man, is a spoof of Hollywood actors' Oscar-chasing
cliche of playing disabled people. Advocacy groups for the disabled,
including the Special Olympics and the Down Syndrome Assn. of Los Angeles,
are scheduled to meet with Dreamworks.
It appears the offense is with the tagline on the Simple Jack poster: "Once upon a time... there was a retard." We hope the grievances are settled reasonably becase the site really was hilarious and Tropic Thunder features fictional trailers for films starring its characters, including Stiller's Simple Jack.
In more positive news, the stars of Tropic Thunder attended a special screening of the film at Camp Pendleton this past Sunday. Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. introduced the film to a packed audience of stationed Marines and Navy Members, after arriving in military humvees.
Stiller on the event:
"We were really excited to show this movie to the military personnel who do so much for our country. I think they really got a kick out of seeing a bunch of spoiled actors complaining about how hard it is to do a war movie. But seriously, it was really hard. We almost did a boot camp, but then decided on a cast dinner instead."

Paul Rudd's Role Models Trailer Premiere
by Rick Duran
As promised, MTV.com has premiered the trailer for Role Models (opening November 14th), the film starring Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, Elizabeth Banks and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. In past interviews, Scott has compared the film's tone to Old School and Wedding Crashers, and the trailer does hint at that (ie. the "reformed bad boys" concept), but it looks more like School of Rock in tone. In the film, two energy drink salesmen are sentenced to serving community service in a Big Brothers program (look for 40 Year-Old Virgin's Jane Lynch as the program director.) Banks is looking cute as ever, and Chris "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse has some choice scenes as the creepy kid assigned to Rudd. However, it looks like the big scene-stealer is Fred Claus' Bobb'e J. Thompson as the kid assigned to Scott. He walks away with the trailer's best quotes ("You white? Then you Ben Affleck.")
Early test screenings suggest the film is a hard R-Rated film; if this
true, we'll keep you informed if a redband trailer pops up (the current
trailer leans towards PG-13.) This is Paul Rudd's first credited screenwriting
effort (co-writing with Ken Marino and director David Wain), so we've
got high expectations.
Zack and Miri Get an R-Rating
by Rick Duran
In
further Team Apatow news, many of you have read Seth Rogen's disappointment
with the MPAA over a preliminary NC-17 rating for his next film Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Fans can now throw their hairy palms
in the air, as director Kevin Smith has won
an appeal with the Motion Picture Association of America to lower
the film's rating to an R. This is great news because if Smith's appeal
had been turned down, he would have had to make cuts on one certain
scene that is apparently one of the funniest. Rogen, Elizabeth Banks,
Craig Robinson and Justin Long can all be seen when Zack and Miri opens (in its original form) Halloween Weekend 2008.

No Olde Times for Jack Black
by Rick Duran
The
long-troubled Ye Olde Times project has seen its worst news yet.
In an interview
with the Orlando Sentinel, Jack Black reveals that he's dropped
out of Ye Olde Times, a project he was only attached to as "a
favor for a friend."
It was to star or at least feature Jack Black. But he says "not happening, dude," to me in an interview last weekend. "I was doing that as a favor for a friend'o mine. Now, he's not involved. I won't be, either."
While the film wasn't exciting in concept, Jack was originally going to narrate this tale of two rival Renaissance Fairs, we're bummed because the supporting cast was going to feature Frat Pack familiar faces John C. Reilly, Will Arnett and Tim Robbins. We knew this production was in danger last summer, when our own Kevin Crossman investigated and learned that its Northern California shoot had been completely scrapped. Trouble was also evident when Lindsay Lohan suddenly dropped out less than two months of signing on for a key role. Here's hoping Jack, John, Will and Tim will be seen together in a different film. Lindsay... we're not holding our breath for. It should be noted that just a couple weeks ago, Jack Black also dropped out of Todd Phillips' Man Witch.
Role Models Trailer Premieres Tomorrow; MTV Debuts
New Stills
by Rick Duran
The new trailer for Role Models, the new Universal
Pictures comedy starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott,
will premiere tomorrow on MTV.com. The film, previously titled both Little Big Men and Big Brothers, is a more mainstream
comedy from director David Wain (The Ten, Wet Hot American
Summer.) We're excited for the trailer since familiar faces Christopher
Mintz-Plasse, Elizabeth Banks and Jane Lynch are part of
the ensemble cast. MTV's
Movie Blog has some exclusive stills, including shots of Rudd and
Scott with Mintz-Plasse and Fred Claus' Bobb'e J. Thompson.
Role Models hits theaters on November 14, 2008. Check back on
the Frat Pack Tribute tomorrow (Tuesday) for links (and hopefully an
embed) of the trailer.

Jack Black on Cover of USA Weekend
by Kevin Crossman
This was a nice surprise in the Sunday paper today - Jack on the cover of USA Weekend. The article is revealing, as Jack talks about his legacy and being a dad. He also finds time to talk about a little film called Tropic Thunder and confirms rumors of another Tenacious D album and DVD release. There are also some incredible photos and you can even see more in this video montage (boy, it sure takes a lot of shots to come up with the few that are in the magazine).
Anchorman 2 Chatter; Applegate Sympathies
by Kevin Crossman
The Tribute would like to extend deepest sympathies and best wishes to Christina Applegate who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Ame Van Iden, publicist for the 36-year-old actress, released the following statement late Saturday:
"Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery."
Applegate is familiar to Frat Pack fans from her costarring role opposite Will Ferrell in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. The timing of Applegate's announcement is ironic since Anchorman 2 chatter is increasing. Entertainment Weekly recently speculated about the sequel.

According to the article pointed out by our tipster Beth Millman, Adam McKay tells the magazine that he and Will are ready to bring San Diego’s classiest newscaster back to the screen, possibly jumping ahead to the 80's. McKay states, "The audience will now allow us to do even crazier stuff, and that’s really all we’re looking for in our careers." Who else can see Ron Burgundy in a white Miami Vice suit?
Meanwhile, McKay and Ferrell's latest collaboration, Step Brothers, is doing well at the box office. The second weekend drop was a low-ish 47% for a $16.3 million second weekend and $62.9 million total.
EW Highlights Everything Apatow
by Kevin Crossman
Entertainment Weekly is one of our favorites and they did a great job with a full-page look at Frat Packager Judd Apatow. The highlight of the piece is a "Circle of Buds" that is a look at how often some of the Apatow regulars have actually worked with the man. Of course, the Circle is woefully incomplete (where is Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, John C. Reilly, etc. etc. etc. and do we even care about Busy Phillips?) but still we like the concept and it's nice to be reminded that Ben Stiller is a key player in Apatow's orbit, too.
Some may think this diagram is a rip off the similarly named Frat Pack Circle of Trust that we're awfully proud of in these here parts. But, you won't hear any complaining from us. First, this isn't exactly the first time this sort of diagram has been used. Plus, we "kind of" co-opted the Circle of Trust name from the Fockers movies. So, who are we to complain, eh?
Will New Film From Old School Director End Box Office "Hangover?"
by Anthony Jones
Fans
of the Pack should look forward to the new film from Frat Packager Todd Phillips, The Hangover. It's currently set to open
in later 2009, and the plot details a Vegas weekend at a bachelor
party in which three groomsmen lose their friend who's about to get
hitched and must retrace their steps to find him (think Dude, Where's
My Groom?). The two stars signed onto the film so far should both
be familiar to Frat Pack fans: Ed Helms of The Office, Evan Almighty and Semi-Pro, and Bradley Cooper of Wet Hot American Summer and Wedding Crashers fame.
Todd Phillips is, of course, recognized as the man who brought us Old School and Starsky & Hutch.
One could say Phillips hasn't been having the best of luck recently. Last month, you may have read about Jack Black dropping out of his project Man-Witch, and it having to do with a "rift between his agent and the film's director [Phillips]." Prior to this, he was fired as director of Borat in 2006 after having already shot several scenes. He went on to co-write and direct School for Scoundrels that same year, which underperformed, grossing $23 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
The film is set to be distributed by Warner Bros. and is penned by John Lucas and Scott Moore, who also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with Emma Stone (Superbad) and Noureen DeWulf (The Comebacks).

Pineapple Express Panel from Comic-Con
by Kevin Crossman
IFC has a really nice highlights clip from Comic-Con. The Pinapple Express crew includes Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, James Franco and more. There are some funny questions, including the Human Giant guys. Rogen also talks about The Green Hornet and other projects.
Pinapple Express opens on August 6. Read the Tribute's early review.
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Trailer
by Kevin Crossman
Check
out the trailer for the film starring Michael Cera (Superbad)
and Kat Dennings (The 40 Year-Old Virgin). This looks to be
in the Superbad mold and isn't a stretch acting-wise for either
of the leads.
But this film definitely warrants attention, if for no other reason that the incredible cast-against-type role for Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder). In a way, the role kind of reminds me of Ben Stiller's dramatic performance in Permanent Midnight, especially since Baruchel as the same leather jacket and greasy look that Stiller had.
Nick
& Norah's Infinite Playlist
The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and then move to theatres everywhere in early October.
More Tropic Thunder Faux Goodness
by Kevin Crossman
Another day... another great clip from the faux-documentary ("fauxmentary"?) Rain of Madness and another faux website from one of the characters from Tropic Thunder.
Today, we're focusing on Cody Keith Underwood (Danny McBride), the film's special effects coordinator. The doc clip features a bunch of NSFW profanity and delves a little deeper into one of the supporting characters.
